After losing her dad, McMahan put her acting and comedy career on hold and moved back to Atlanta to live with her mother, Robin. While it was meant to be a temporary stay to help her mom and sister, Ashley, with the grieving process, she ended up staying longer.

She told Glamour in a 2019 interview that she fell into a deep depression after her father’s death. She had even lost her passion for acting and comedy, so she changed her career path. She applied for the position of flight attendant with Delta Airlines but was rejected. She knew then that her calling was to be a comedian and actress. So, she continued to pursue her dreams.
