Lupin season 4 renewal status and everything we know so far

Lupin season 3 premiered on Netflix on Thursday, Oct. 5. Fans waited more than two years for new episodes of Lupin, and it didn’t disappoint. The Lupin season 3 ending was satisfying, and it spun the story of Assane Diop (Omar Sy), his friends, his family, his allies, and his enemies into an epic direction. Now, everyone and their dog wants to know if Lupin season 4 is happening on Netflix.

Unfortunately, Netflix has not revealed if Lupin season 4 is happening or not yet. We’re not worried, though. It’s still very early in this process. Only a handful of Netflix shows get early renewals. While Lupin seemed like a good candidate given how popular and successful the show is, there’s been a two-year gap between seasons. Did people forget about the show? Netflix needs to find out how many people are watching Lupin season 3 before ordering the new season.

I think Lupin season 4 will be ordered by Netflix. The series is incredibly popular around the world, and it’s also the best French Netflix original series. Netflix usually doesn’t just bail on a show like this one, especially when there’s more to the story.

Lupin season 4 isn’t coming to Netflix anytime soon

So, to be clear, we don’t know yet if Lupin season 4 is happening, but we do know that if it does happen, we’re going to be waiting a long time to see Lupin season 4. It took more than two years for season 3 to arrive on Netflix, and we’re probably looking at a similar wait if Lupin is renewed for season 4. There’s a lot going on in Paris in the near future, and that could complicate the timeline.

Even if the show were renewed tomorrow, it’s all about how quickly they could get into production. They likely would have to assemble the writers room, crank out some scripts, and then do everything else before filming even starts. That’s not happening in 2023, and as a general rule of thumb, we have to wait at least 12 months from the start of production until a show like this is released on Netflix. Usually, it’s around 16 to 18 months for action shows like Lupin.

Lupin season 3 ending and how it sets up season 4

While Assane Diop is up against it for most of the season, the Lupin season 3 is Assane at his best during the third season.

After finding out the person behind his mother’s kidnapping and blackmailing him is an old mentor, Jean-Luc Keller, Assane makes a move to gain the upper hand. We learn that Assane and Bruno assisted in a robbery when they were kids. Keller was the getaway driver and orchestrator of the robbery, and he orders Bruno to shoot a police officer in pursuit. Bruno shoots the officer, but Keller crashes the car. When Assane pulls Bruno out of the wreckage, he puts the gun in Keller’s hand, implicating him in the shooting. Keller is back for revenge.

At the end of season 3, Assane’s mother, Mariama, escapes from Keller and Manon’s team, and it’s time for Assane’s big move. He is able to flip Manon. She tells Keller to meet at the Arc de Triomphe, but Assane shows up instead. Assane makes Keller bring the Black Pearl and calls Guedira and asks him to bring the police to the Arc de Triomphe. Keller turns over the Black Pearl to Assane and tries to escape before the police arrive. Assane hands the pearl off in a flower, and then turns himself in to Guedira with a few requests: let Benjamin out of prison and give him the complete Lupin collection by Maurice Leblanc for his prison cell.

Claire, Mariama, Raoul, and Benjamin meet at a train station with plans to leave Paris to make a new home without Assane.

All appears to be well-ish until the final scene of the season. Assane is sitting in his prison cell when he’s given a picture of himself as a child holding an Arsene Lupin book: The Cagliostro’s Revenge. It’s been delivered by Hubert Pellegrini, who Assane put behind bars last season.

So, it appears that, if season 4 happens, Lupin season 4 will explore Pellegrini’s revenge on Assane for everything that happened prior to season 3. I’m so excited for that story! Anything that makes Assane sweat it out a little bit and have to get even more creative to escape Pellegrini’s wrath.

Who would be in the Lupin Part 4 cast?

Netflix hasn’t confirmed the whole Lupin season 4 cast yet, but we have a good idea who will be back in the new season. The series should bring back the main cast and characters from previous seasons.
