The Babysitter

Now for a change of pace… let’s discuss one of Netflix’s most underrated slasher movies. The Babysitter, starring the brilliant Samara Weaving, is a campy, horny, satanic delight that exploits many of the genre’s most endearing and silly tropes. Weaving has already claimed her title as a modern scream queen, and this movie helped cement her status—she would later star in the excellent Ready or Not.

From filmmaker McG, The Babysitter follows pre-teen Cole, played by I See You alum Judah Lewis. Cole has a massive crush on his babysitter, Bee, played by Weaving (me too, Cole).

One night, Cole stays up late to spy on Bee and is horrified to discover she’s an occultist with sadistic tendencies. She and her friends, played by Bella Thorne, Robbie Amell, Andrew Bachelor, and Hana Mae Lee, are part of a secretive devil-worshipping cult that intends to steal some of Cole’s blood while he sleeps.

The Babysitter has its heartfelt moments, but overall this zany slasher movie is an absolute blast with tons of bloodshed and gore. If you’re a fan of horror-comedy movies, then this is the perfect pick. However, while the 2017 film is a “watch,” you can skip its sequel, The Babysitter: Killer Queen. It’s not awful, but it has significantly less charm than the first.

VERDICT: Watch
