October is here and if you’re like me, you’ve already been watching Halloween movies for a few months. But whether you’re ten movies deep or just getting started, there are a lot of horror options available to Netflix subscribers!

There’s no better way to start the fall than by getting into the Halloween spirit, even a little early. Whether that’s decorating your room with pumpkins or tuning in for your favorite scary movie. Sadly, it doesn’t look like Netflix is doing an official “Netflix & Chills” line-up this year, so we’ll have to make our own!

As we inch closer and closer to the creepy holiday, here are the best titles to watch on Netflix for Halloween, starting with and older film, but one that still very much holds up.

The Strangers

Most of us have feared the possibility of someone breaking into our house in the middle of the night, especially if you often keep yourself up watching true crime documentaries and old episodes of Criminal Minds. That’s why Bryan Bertino’s chilling home invasion film The Strangers is such an effectively simple horror movie.

Bertino isn’t afraid to use the silence to his advantage, letting audiences catch a glimpse of the masked assailant out of the corner of their eye or just out of frame to allow the imagination to run wild. Even though the end of the movie starts to fall apart, the first two acts are a masterclass in tension-building and helped The Strangers linger in the zeitgeist more than a decade after its debut.

Many still consider this to be one of the scariest movies ever and the simple truth is that The Strangers‘ realistic premise taps into our very real fears. What happened in this movie could happen, and has happened, to many people in real life. There are no monsters here beyond the masked humans terrorizing a couple because they just happened to be home, and that’s the most terrifying things of all because it’s completely out of our control. It’s truly a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

VERDICT: Watch
