Killer Book Club

Killer Book Club is one of the newer offerings on Netflix. Released at the tail-end of September, the Spanish slasher movie follows a group of eight friends who are part of a book club dedicated to discussing everyone’s favorite horror novels. However, in a very I Know What You Did Last Summer-style twist, the friends also share a very dark secret.

Imagine their surprise when a masked clown killer starts picking them off one-by-one, seemingly in retribution for the secret they’re hiding. Killer Book Club just feels like a rehashing of superior teen horror movies like the aforementioned I Know What You Did Last Summer and the Scream franchise.

The characters aren’t very endearing, which was always a significant part of the appeal of the Scream movies and other 90s slashers, plus the killer’s identity is easily predicted along with their motive. Killer Book Club is far from the worst of Netflix’s offerings, but there are so many superior options available on the streaming service that it seems silly to put this one at the top of any watchlist. Skip it and rewatch Scream instead (although it’s sadly not streaming on Netflix right now).

VERDICT: Skip
