Back in September 2021, Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company, and since then, we’ve been waiting to see what works from the iconic Roald Dahl would be adapted into a movie or series and released on Netflix. We’ve recently seen the release of Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, but what’s coming up next?

Roald Dahl was the author of many great short stories and children’s books. He’s best known for writing the children’s novels James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and Fantastic Mr Fox. He also wrote the short stories “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” “The Swan,” “The Landlady,” etc.

Some of his work has already been adapted into movies such as Matilda (1996), Matilda the Musical (2022), James and the Giant Peach (1996) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). In fact, some of these films are available to stream on Netflix right now.

In late September 2023, Netflix is set to release four short films adapted from four of Dahl’s short stories. There’s also an upcoming Roald Dahl animated film coming to the streamer in the future.

As of Sept. 25, there are only two movies in the Roald Dahl collection on Netflix. Those movies are Matilda and Matilda the Musical. But we can expect four new short films in his collection to arrive on the streamer in late September 2023. Those films are The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, The SwanThe Rat Catcher and Poison.

Netflix release dates for new Roald Dahl short films:

  • The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is scheduled to land on Netflix on Sept. 27.
  • The Swan will be released on Netflix on Sept. 28.
  • The Rat Catcher drops on Netflix on Sept. 29.
  • Poison is slated to land on Netflix on Sept. 30.

Roald Dahl’s children’s novel The Twits is currently being adapted into an animated film for Netflix. Academy Award nominee Phil Johnston will write, produce, and direct the upcoming movie, which is set to be released sometime in 2025.

Here’s what the animated movie will be about via Netflix:

"This story follows Mr. and Mrs. Twit — who are the miserable owners of a dangerous amusement park — and their meteoric rise to power in their town. The Twits’ takeover leads to an ongoing conflict between them, two children, and a community of magical animals who are determined to stop them."

We’ll keep you posted if there’s any new Roald Dahl content coming to Netflix in the future.
