For millennials, Spy Kids might be one of the most nostalgic movies around. The action comedy first debuted in 2001 and launched an entire franchise, including two direct sequels, a standalone sequel, an animated series, and now the Netflix reboot Spy Kids: Armageddon.

The first Spy Kids movie, and its two sequels Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, starred Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara in the titular roles as Carmen and Juni Cortez. They later returned for the 2011 standalone sequel Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, which starred Jessica Alba and Joel McHale.

In the new Netflix reboot, Gina Rodriguez and Zachary Levi take leads as the parental unit of spies, with Connor Esterson and Everly Carganilla playing their children who also get into the spy game. The family takes on a dangerous game developer who’s set on gaining widespread control of the world’s technology, and it’s up to the kids (of course!) to save their folks and stop the bad guy.

Before watching the reboot, or even while watching the reboot, fans of the original Spy Kids movies might be wondering whether Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara make a cameo appearance as Carmen and Juni. So, do they pop up in Armageddon?

Are Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara in Spy Kids: Armageddon?

Unfortunately, Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara are not in Spy Kids: Armageddon and do not make a cameo appearance as Carmen and Juni in the reboot. This time around, they handed over the reins to the new generation of spy kids.

While the original writer-director Robert Rodriguez returned to helm the reboot, he previously spoke about keeping Armageddon a completely new entity. He told Netflix’s Tudum that he has still been in contact with PenaVega and Sabara, but he wanted to establish the new family unit while also delivering a few Easter eggs for fans of the original movies.

Even though Carmen and Juni aren’t in the new movie, they are the focus of Netflix’s animated series Spy Kids: Mission Control (but PenaVega and Sabara aren’t the voices for their characters).

These days, Pena Vega is married to singer and actor Carlos PenaVega with three children and stars mostly in Hallmark Channel movies. Sabara is married to singer Meghan Trainor with two children and most recently lent his voice to Ben 10 and its 2020 movie.
