Once again it’s up to two brave siblings to help save the world in the new movie Spy Kids: Armageddon! The film begins streaming Friday, Sept. 22, 2023 on Netflix. So what is it all about?

The spy action comedy stars Zachary Levi and Gina Rodriguez as parents Terrence Tango and Nora Torrez, respectively. Their two kids are son Tony Tango-Torrez, played by Connor Esterson, and daughter Patty Tango-Torrez. The young character is portrayed by Everly Carganilla. Rounding out the cast are D.J. Cortona as Devlin and Billy Magnussen as Rey “The King” Kingston.

So what can you expect to see in the movie? Is it a continuation of the Spy Kids films that started in 2001? We’ve got the answer for you below!

What is Spy Kids: Armageddon about?

Spy Kids: Armageddon is centered around the Tango-Torrez family, who isn’t just your typical family. The children, Tony and Patty, have to find out the hard way that their parents are actually secret agents after they accidentally help a Game Developer bring video game villains to the real world, per the synopsis and trailer. So it’s up to the two youngsters to defeat him, which means they’ll have to become spies themselves. Check out the logline and trailer provided by Netflix below:

"When the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful Game Developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world."

Is Spy Kids: Armageddon connected to the originals?

Spy Kids: Armageddon is not connected to the original movies. The production serves as a reboot. However, the director, writer, and producer of the new film is also the same one who held those roles in the first four movies. That means even though the new tale isn’t connected to the previous stories in the franchise, it all still comes from the same creative mind. Here’s what the director, Robert Rodriguez said in a statement shared by Netflix Tudum:

"This movie really wants to stand on its own, kind of establish the family. But that doesn’t mean there won’t be any references to the original films. There [will] be Easter eggs."

And what’s sweet is the fact that this movie is about family, and Rodriguez got a chance to work with his own kids on the project too! He co-wrote the script with his son Racer, while his other son Rebel composed the music.

Spy Kids, Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over are currently all available to watch on YouTube for free, as well as with a Paramount+ subscription. The fourth in the franchise, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, is available to purchase on-demand.
