What happens to Cal in Sex Education season 4? (spoilers)

Some of our favorite Sex Education characters had very interesting storylines in the fourth and final season of the teen series, but the character whose storyline we were most invested in was Cal’s.

We’re introduced to Cal in the third season of Sex Education. They’re a new student at Moordale Secondary School and identify as non-binary. They eventually become close friends with Jackson, but their friendship becomes complicated after feelings get involved. At the end of the third season, Cal tells Jackson they should remain friends, and Jackson seems to be okay with this decision. But it looks like Jackson was lying because he and Cal start off the fourth season not on good terms.

Jackson is still not over Cal in Sex Education season 4, so he tries to distance himself from them. Although this hurts Cal, they decide to move on and focus on transitioning. When they turned 18 years old, they went to a private doctor and started taking testosterone. In the fourth season, they’ve been on testosterone for six months and notice significant changes in their voice, sex drive, and physical appearance. But although they’re happy about these changes, they’re still not completely satisfied with themselves because they want to go through with top surgery.

But top surgery is costly, and it’s not easy to get done. Cal finds out from Roman that getting an appointment can take a long time. This discourages them even more. They reach their breaking point after they get their period. Cal had hoped that their period would be gone since they were taking testosterone. Now, their gender dysphoria is at an all-time high. They no longer feel like themselves, and their life begins to spiral out of control. But what ends up happening to Cal in the fourth season? Find out below.

No, Cal does not die in the fourth season. However, they do have struggles with their mental health. Luckily, they have good friends to help them out.

What happens to Cal in Sex Education season 4?

In the season 4 finale, Cal’s mom shows up at Cavendish College and tells Cal’s friends that Cal is missing. So, they start a search for Cal. After searching everywhere, Cal is eventually found outside, sitting on a rock near the edge of a cliff.

Eric approaches Cal and tells them that everyone’s been looking for them. Cal explains to Eric that they have been outside for a while but don’t know what happened. They basically tell Eric that their emotions have been all over the place because they don’t feel like themselves and don’t feel loved by others because of who they are. Eric comforts Cal and tells them that they are loved and that they’re not alone. Jackson also shows up to comfort Cal. Then, Eric asks Cal if he and Jackson should take them home. Cal tells them yes, and they all walk home.

On the night of the fundraiser, Aisha goes to Cal’s house and asks them if it would be okay if they raise money for their top surgery. Cal tells her yes, but decides not to go to the fundraiser because they’re not ready to see everyone yet. The last time we see Cal in Sex Education season 4 is when they’re lying in bed, and their mom gets in bed with them to hug them. It’s such a sweet moment.
