Back in 2018, television viewers had the chance to fall in love with a new medical drama series. New Amsterdam premiered with a fresh take on the genre and quickly attracted a loyal fanbase. After the season 5 finale, some fans will be wondering if New Amsterdam season 6 is on the way. Sadly, a sixth season isn't in the cards, but there's word of a potential spinoff sequel!

90210 and The Blacklist vet Ryan Eggold stars in the series, based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer, as Dr. Max Goodwin. As the new medical director of the titular hospital, he looks to bring a little good to their many patients’ lives.

New Amsterdam was a stable ratings player from the beginning of its run, riding the wave of its early lead-in This Is Us. During its second season in January 2020, NBC renewed the series for three more seasons, which brings the hit medical drama to its fifth season.

After watching the season 5 finale, will there be a season 6 of New Amsterdam to look forward to in the future? Here’s everything fans, new and old, need to know about the future of the beloved medical drama, including the new sequel series NBC has put into development.

New Amsterdam season 6 isn't happening

Unfortunately, there will not be a sixth season of New Amsterdam on NBC. The network announced that the fifth season, which finished airing on Jan. 17, 2023, would be the final season of the medical drama. New Amsterdam season 6 won’t happen.

There’s no need to start online petitions or start fighting for another streaming service like Netflix to save the medical drama. The series had plenty of time to plan a proper ending, as the final season announcement arrived in March 2022 ahead of the September 2022 premiere of season 5.

Before the airing of the series finale, series star Ryan Eggold shared a beautiful tribute to the series on Instagram alongside a photo of himself smiling on set as Max. He began his tribute by saying, “Man this show has meant a lot to me… I’m proud of the many stories we’ve been able to tell over these five years.”

A sequel series is in development at NBC

That's right! On March 19, 2024, news broke that New Amsterdam's home network NBC was eyeing a potential sequel series spinoff centered on Max's adult daughter, Dr. Luna Goodwin. The show's creator, David Schulner, has been developing the tentatively titled New Amsterdam: Tomorrow, which was slightly teased in the original show's series finale with Luna taking on her dad's job at the titular hospital.

The sequel spinoff would exist in the same universe 30 years into the future as Luna follows her father's footsteps and works as the medical director of the New Amsterdam Hospital. Deadline also reveals that the sequel series would tackle the topic of artificial intelligences as it relates to moving the medical field forward in the future. Clearly, the series would have all the makings of an interesting and incredibly worthy successor to the original!

Since the show has only been placed in initial development, Deadline notes that it's unclear if Molly Briggs, who played adult Luna Goodwin in the original show's series finale, would reprise her role should NBC pick up the sequel. However, Deadline does note that Ryan Eggold isn't currently involved in the process. We'll have to wait further on down the line to learn more about casting decisions and whether Eggold would be on board as a producer or appear in flashbacks.

The news of a possible return to the world of New Amsterdam comes on the heels of its popularity on Netflix, not unlike fellow NBCUniversal title Suits. NBC has also been developing a follow-up series for the legal drama, Suits: LA starring Arrow's Stephen Amell. For fans of these series, it's totally a win for the shows to become franchises. You never know what the future could hold!

Why did New Amsterdam end after season 5?

New Amsterdam wasn’t canceled in the traditional sense. Having already renewed the series for three more seasons back in 2020, NBC then opted for the fifth season to be a shortened final season. As mentioned before, the final season announcement arrived in time for the creative team to craft a proper final season and series ending.

However, it seems that declined ratings were part of the culprit for New Amsterdam coming to an end on NBC. It’s typical for some veteran series on broadcast television to have lower ratings in their later seasons. Networks also often tend to cite budgetary reasons for cancellations, as most television shows become more expensive to produce as they age.

As much as it will sting for fans to not have more stories to look forward to with New Amsterdam season 6, it’s the perfect time to start re-binge-watching the series from the beginning on Netflix. Watch all of the heartfelt and heartbreaking moments unfold all over again.
