Best Netflix movies coming in fall 2023

Here are the ten Netflix movies coming this fall that we’re most excited to watch, starting with Wes Anderson’s latest work, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar

  • Directed by: Wes Anderson
  • Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Rupert Friend, and Richard Ayoade

Based on the short story contained in Roald Dahl’s 1977 collection, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is actually a not a feature film but instead a short film (just 37 minutes long) that will be part of a four-part anthology. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar marks Wes Anderson’s second adaptation of Dahl’s work following 2009’s Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Filtered through several narrators and recollections, the short story follows a wealthy man named Henry Sugar (Benedict Cumberbatch) who discovers a guru able to see without using his eyes. Henry sets out to find this guru and learn his ways so he can use this talent to cheat at gambling.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar marks Netflix’s first Roald Dahl adaptation after the streamer acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company for $686 million in 2021. Originally, it was planned as a full-length feature, but Anderson felt the story made more sense as a short film.

Dahl’s original collection includes seven short stories in all and, according to Variety, Anderson confirmed he has either filmed (or is planning to film) at least three more to complete his four-part anthology, including “The Swan,” “Poison,” and “The Ratcatcher.” During the recent Venice Film Festival premiere of The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Anderson teased what fans can expect from the upcoming shorts.

"“There’s another one that’s in the ‘Henry Sugar’ collection that’s called ‘The Swan,’ we’ve done that with Rupert Friend,” Anderson said. “We did a very old one called ‘Poison,’ which is one I always loved… And then we’ve also done a very, very strange one called ‘Ratcatcher,’ which is from a book called ‘Claud’s Dog,’ a kind of obscure Dahl book set in the Eastern part of England. It’s a really rural one, it’s a peculiar story. And they’re all strange. But I don’t really have any other ones in mind. I have some things brewing, but that might be it for Dahl for the moment.”"

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar premieres on September 27. It will also receive a limited theatrical release a week earlier, on September 20.
