Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega is not only Netflix’s no. 1 most-watched show of all time, even beating out Stranger Things season 4, but it’s one of the biggest streaming shows ever, period.
Given its staggering response, it’s no surprise that Netflix renewed the Tim Burton-produced series for a second season. But we’re coming up on almost a year, and we still haven’t received any filming updates on Wednesday season 2. Will it be released this year?
Unfortunately, Wednesday is one of many shows and films impacted by the ongoing writer and actor strikes. Until they can get a fair deal from the AMPTP, many popular projects are going to remain on hold indefinitely.
Is Wednesday season 2 coming in 2023?
Prep for Wednesday season 2 started earlier this year. Ortega has teased some things fans can expect from the new season, which she promises will be darker and contain less romance. Filming was reportedly meant to get underway in October or November, but the strikes don’t appear to be coming to an end anytime soon so that timeframe now seems unlikely. In short, there is no way Wednesday season 2 could come out in 2023.
Is Wednesday season 2 coming in 2024?
If the strikes are resolved by the end of the year, or even early 2024, it still seems unlikely that Wednesday season 2 would arrive before 2025. Even though some prep has started, it will still take at least six months to film season 2, and that’s not including post-production time. A late 2024 release date is possible but seems unlikely.
Also, with the strikes and the shifting timetables, Jenna Ortega might have to rearrange her schedule. As an in-demand actress with several projects lined up, she might not be available to film the show until later in 2024.
For now, we just don’t have enough information to accurately guess when the series will return. The most important thing right now is supporting the WGA and SAG as the strikes continue.
