Back in May 2023, Netflix announced that all nine seasons of the popular legal drama series, Suits, would be landing on its streaming platform on June 17. But when the day arrived, a season was noticeably missing. Suits season 9 did not end up dropping on Netflix as mentioned. Why is that? Find out below.
Suits is one of those shows that you just can’t ever get tired of rewatching. It originally aired on the USA Network from June 2011 to September 2019 for nine seasons and quickly became one of the television network’s most popular series. It was even nominated for numerous awards throughout its run, with Gina Torres winning an NHMC Impact Award and an Imagen Foundation Award.
The legal drama followed smart but troubled college dropout Mike Ross, who after impressing a headstrong New York corporate lawyer, manages to land an associate position at a top law firm, despite not having the license to practice law.
Patrick J. Adams starred as Mike Ross, while Gabriel Macht portrayed the role of the hotshot lawyer who hired Mike, Harvey Specter. Rick Hoffman, Meghan Markle, Sarah Rafferty, Gina Torres, Amanda Schull, Dulé Hill, Katherine Heigl, and many others joined them in the cast.
Why isn’t Suits season 9 on Netflix?
Unfortunately, we don’t know the exact reason why Suits season 9 isn’t streaming on Netflix, but it’s believed that the show already has an existing deal with another streaming platform. If you were unaware, the ninth season is currently available to stream on Peacock and Amazon Prime Video with a subscription. But while Peacock carries all nine seasons, Amazon Prime only has the ninth season.
It looks like the legal drama’s deal with Amazon Prime prevents the ninth season from coming to Netflix. Before Suits seasons 1-8 arrived on Netflix, these seasons were available to stream on Amazon Prime. As soon as they dropped on Netflix, they were removed from Amazon Prime.
Our guess is that Amazon Prime’s licensing agreement with the show for seasons 1-8 expired, so Netflix was able to acquire streaming rights to those seasons. Amazon Prime most likely still has exclusive streaming rights for Suits season 9, and that’s why it’s still streaming on its platform and not on Netflix. However, the ninth season will likely expire in the future, and Netflix will have the opportunity to pick up streaming rights. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Suits seasons 1-8 are streaming on Netflix.
