Netflix seems to have mastered the art of making a good documentary. Whether it’s Quarterback for sports fans, learning about an extreme sport in The Deepest Breath, or the upcoming How to Become a Cult Leader, the streamer is great at shedding light on true stories. If you’re a fan of true crime docs, you’ll want to add The Lady of Silence: The Mataviejitas Murders to your watch list.

What is it about? What does it mean in terms of the story? We’ve got the answer for you below.

What is The Lady of Silence: The Mataviejitas Murders on Netflix about?

The film is about the former professional wrestler turned serial killer Juana Barraza, also known as La Mataviejitas, which roughly translates to”Little Old Lady Killer” because she was charged with killing 16 elderly women. However, investigators believe she may have killed as many as 48.

Barraza’s crimes began in Mexico City in the year 2000. The Netflix documentary shows how the government used all its resources to try and capture Mexico’s first serial killer. It also sheds light on Barraza’s methods of killing, including masquerading as a nurse to gain victims’ trust.

Police arrested Barraza in January 2006. She was known as “The Lady of Silence” in the ring and “The Old Lady Killer” in the media.

The trailer hints at what the documentary will explore, like how she eluded police and that a copycat killer emerged, making it harder for law enforcement to track down the right person. We shared the video below:
