Bird Box 3 updates: How Bird Box Barcelona sets up a potential sequel

Set around the same time as the 2018 movie Bird Box, Bird Box Barcelona takes viewers on a new journey through postapocalyptic Spain. We meet new characters, like Sebastián and his daughter Anna, along with the various survivors they team up with to try and find refuge in Barcelona.

Mysterious invisible monsters are roaming freely, and anyone who sees them is overcome with a sudden desire to commit suicide. However, unlike the first film, Bird Box Barcelona is not directly based on a Josh Malerman novel, not even his book sequel Malorie. Bird Box Barcelona is based on the world created by Malerman but features an original story and characters from writers/directors Álex and David Pastor.

The film’s ending has an intriguing sequel hook that could mean another movie set in this terrifying world is coming. Here’s what we know about the possibility of a third film.

Will there be a third Bird Box movie?

Bird Box Barcelona was released on Friday, July 14, 2023. Netflix hasn’t announced its plans for the franchise’s future, but there is a good chance the streamer has something in mind based on how the second film ends.

We’ll have to hold tight for now because the ongoing SAG and WGA strikes make it hard to say what the future holds for Hollywood. SAG members are not allowed to make negotiations or sign new contracts during the strike.

Bird Box Barcelona introduces an intriguing new element to the world of Bird Box. Now we know some survivors are immune to the entities’ effects. These people are known as “seers” and have a special kind of DNA that could be used to create a cure.

The final scene shows the Montjuïc scientists experimenting on lab rats by injecting them with seer blood and seeing how long they can last when exposed to one of the captured entities. A third film could explore the possibility of a cure (and maybe explain how these people managed to catch one of those things!?).
