Puss in Boots 3: Will there be another Puss in Boots movie?

The wait is completely over! Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is finally streaming on Netflix, and tons of people have already started watching the animated film. In fact, some people have already finished the movie and are wondering if there will be a third installment. Is a Puss in Boots 3 in the works? We shared everything we know about a potential third film right below.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a sequel to the spin-off movie Puss in Boots (2011). It takes place after the events of Shrek Forever After, and follows the titular character, Puss in Boots, as he embarks on an epic journey to find the magical Wishing Star and restore his nine lives. With him on his journey are his former partner and nemesis, Kitty Softpaws, and the chatty yet friendly dog Perrito. But finding the mythical Last Wish isn’t an easy task for this trio of heroes, especially since they’re not the only ones after it.

Antonio Banderas reprises his voice role as Puss in Boots and Salma Hayek Pinault as Kitty Softpaws. Joining the cast as the voice of Perrito is Harvey Guillén. Olivia Colman, Samson Kayo, Wagner Moura, John Mulaney, Florence Pugh, Ray Winstone, Anthony Mendez, and many others also voice characters in the film.

So, should we be expecting a Puss in Boots 3 in the future? Here’s what we know.

Will there be a Puss in Boots 3?

As of July 2023, there’s still no news on if there will be a third film. The second film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was released in the theaters back on Dec. 21, 2022, which is almost seven months ago. It received strong reviews and performed really well at the box office, garnering a worldwide total of $484.7 million. The movie was even nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. But even with the success of the second film, we still haven’t heard anything about a Puss in Boots 3 actually happening.

Co-director of the sequel, Joel Crawford, spoke with The Playlist back in February 2023 and talked about the possibility of a Puss in Boots 3.

"“I don’t know what’s going on with anything after this, but it was all this hopeful thing of we love these characters. We believe in this story that we’re telling and we hope that audiences will engage with it and demand more stories, both with the Puss and Boots side and also with Shrek. I feel like I can say based on the world’s reception of it, that it does feel like they’ve said ‘Yes, we want more,’ which I’m so happy about. But honestly, I hope to keep getting to tell stories with all of these characters.”"

What we gathered from this interview is that a third movie is not currently in the works, but due to the second film’s success, a Puss in Boots 3 could happen. Based on how Puss in Boots: The Last Wish ended, we definitely haven’t seen the last of the adventurous orange-striped cat. However, it’s unclear if we’ll see him in another Puss in Boots movie or in another spin-off. Who knows, maybe he’ll appear in the highly anticipated Shrek 5.
