What happens to Pia in Black Mirror season 6 episode 2?

The second episode of Black Mirror season 6 definitely takes a darker turn from the first, following a couple named Davis and Pia who visit Davis’ childhood home in a small Scottish town. Wanting to make a documentary in a nearby isle, their plans change once Pia learns of a horror story that took place where Davis grew up.

As we learn, there was a serial killer named Iain Adair in the ’90s, who got caught after kidnapping a couple vacationing in town. Davis’ father Kenneth was a police officer at the time and got shot by Iain when confronting him, but ended up dying in the hospital after contracting a bacterial staph infection.

The story is obviously very personal to Davis considering his dad’s involvement, but Pia is adamant it would make a great documentary. Reluctantly, Davis agrees, and his childhood friend Stuart helps them make it. As they start doing some digging and filming their project, however, the shocking truth comes out. Davis’ parents Kenneth and Janet were actually involved in the murders.

Does Pia die in Black Mirror season 6 episode 2, “Loch Henry”?

Unfortunately, Pia does die by the end of the episode. Once she finds out about Janet and Kenneth’s connection to the crime, she tries to escape but is caught by Janet, who realizes she made the discovery. Pia runs away out in the dark fields and ends up taking a serious fall while crossing through a river. She hits her face against the rocks, making a loud crashing sound, and is seemingly unconscious.

That’s the last we see of Pia. Later on after a flash-forward, we learn that there’s been a documentary produced about the murders, including Kenneth and Janet’s involvement and Davis and Pia’s trip. Janet kills herself after realizing she’s been caught and leaves evidence for Davis to find. The documentary ends up winning a BAFTA Award, and while up on stage, one of the filmmakers dedicates the movie to Davis and “his late girlfriend Pia,” which confirms Pia is dead.

We never get clear confirmation of how Pia dies, but the fall looks serious enough to have killed her. One might speculate that maybe Janet finds her and kills her, but I don’t think she would be able to. Plus, that would likely be something the series would show. I’m a fan of ambiguity, so I like that we don’t really know all the details about Pia’s death.
