Manifest season 4 episode 20 series finale recap: Final Boarding

Well, here we are. The FINAL episode of Manifest. The passengers at the campsite wake up suddenly, unable to breathe. The Stones quietly mourn Cal around the fire, but Olive insists she can still feel him. A tremor threatens what’s to come, and another ominous sign comes from a volcano inscription on a rock in the woods. As Olive, Jared, and Drea depart for the Stone house, they say their last goodbyes since the Death Date isn’t near, it’s here.

Ben, Michaela, Saanvi, and TJ realize the all woke up with a “panic attack,” and Saanvi theorizes it’s a preview of how they die. Meanwhile, Jared and Drea secure the Stone home, now free of Angelina and her flock, who make a pit stop while on their road trip. Adrian and Eagan, who have seemingly followed them, cut a cable in Angelina’s van, slowing them down on their journey. It’s obvious they’re each traveling toward the light beam from the previous night.

As news reports of volcanoes around the world come in, all of the passengers arrive at the campsite, stating that they saw the beacon and it pulled them to its location. Ben addresses the passengers from atop the fissure where Cal sacrificed himself, and as he does, the fissure erupts and Flight 828 — the whole plane! — emerges from the ground. It’s time for their final judgment, and they carefully enter the plane one by one. Of course, a gun-wielding Angelina arrives and barks at them to get off her “ark.” Thankfully, her powers disappear, but not before she shoots Saanvi in the arm.

While Drea goes into labor, Olive discovers that the drawing of Ben carrying her is actually of him carrying Angelina. He must forgive her in order to survive his final judgment. Oddly enough, he’s holding Angelina at gunpoint, ready to get revenge for Grace and Eden. He doesn’t receive Olive’s message, but he realizes what he needs to do his own. He carries Angelina onto the plane (an action star moment!) even though a nearby explosion nearly kills her. With all of the passengers secure on the plane, Amuta and Michaela captain the plane into the sky.

Once they’re in the air, above the erupted volcano, multiple passengers are experiencing a loss of breath. Paul crumbles into ash in front of their eyes, and Randall follows. It’s their final judgment. A lot of passengers crumble into ash, including Autumn, but Adrian and Eagan are able to beat their Death Date. When Saanvi starts to crumble, Ben fights for her and explains all the good things she has done, which saves her life. Angelina dies… obviously. As the world seemingly ends, Jared helps Drea give birth to their daughter, Hope.

From the ashes of a passenger (Angelina, probably), a shadow monster (the evil from within) emerges into thin air and joins with the evil of the rest of the dead passengers. The remaining passengers fight back against the shadow monster, yelling at it until it disappears. Outside, they notice the volcanic activity is gone. They saved the world. However, Amuta sees the Glow up ahead, and Michaela tells him to fly directly into it. When the disembark the plane, they exit into a glaring white light. Are they dead? No, they walk through a door in their clothes from the pilot episode and enter the airport, back on April 7, 2013.

Ben and Michaela see Grace and their mother and celebrate with behavior that’s odd to their loved ones. Cal, once again young and not in his 20s, runs off the plane and gives Saanvi her laptop. Olive, too, is back to being a child. Even though Cal doesn’t remember, the rest of the passengers remember what they went through to get back to where they started. Saanvi still has her gunshot from Angelina, and Ben has the wooden dragon figurine. Mementos from their time saving the world.

Michaela explains in a voiceover that they earned their “ultimate second chance” after five and a half years of fighting. Finally, all of the passengers are unburdened and full of love and understanding, even Eagan, who calls his parents. Unfortunately, Michaela has some bad news to deliver to Jared: She turns down his marriage proposal, insisting he’ll find his way to who he belongs with. She also tells him, “You gotta have Hope.” We see what you did there, Mick!

Saanvi and Alex end up together, and Ben watches their reunion with a grin, and when Grace asks who she is, he tells her that Saanvi will be the one to cure Cal’s cancer. He also says he swears on the lives of their three kids, though they currently only have two. Meanwhile, Michaela remembers what Zeke told her about their near-miss moments and rushes outside to catch a cab. She finds him in a parked taxi and hops in his cab after telling a man the driver is her husband. Zeke’s curious about how she knows him and their supposed story. Still, they drive off to find their happily ever after second chance.

After Landing:

  • Other passengers who died throughout the five and a half years (such as Violet) were brought back to life, coming off the plane after the main Lifeboat.
  • Eagan and Adrian seemingly go into business together. Good luck, world!
  • Angelina’s father argues with the flight attendant at the airport when Angelina doesn’t come off the plane. Yeah, about that…
  • Since Olive isn’t an adult anymore, she and TJ don’t end up together. But he appears to get a second chance at love with Violet.
  • Jared and Drea meet outside the airport and hit it off with playful banter. She’s helping the team, including Vance, investigate Flight 828’s 11 missing passengers. Ben overhears Vance’s frustration and looks on with a knowing chuckle.
  • No one knows why or how April 7, 2013 happened to these passengers, but Michaela ends the series saying, “All I know is it was the day life changed forever.”
