Netflix shows canceled: 1899

  • Created By: Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar
  • Starring: Emily Beecham, Andreas Pietschmann, Aneurin Barnard, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musiał, Isabella Wei, Mathilde Ollivier, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Fflyn Edwards, and more

Netflix had several impressive releases in the last quarter of 2022, including the German production 1899. The mind-bending mystery thriller was incredibly ambitious for a number of reasons, including but not limited to the multi-lingual characters, the large ensemble cast, and the fact that the creators used the new technology The Volume to film each scene.

1899 creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar already had a large following from their previous Netflix show Dark, which ran for three seasons. The filmmakers are well known for their twisty and complicated storylines which become addicting to try and solve. Their latest period drama was no different, however sadly we won’t get more answers as Netflix canceled 1899 in early 2023.

Though some believed 1899 was too slow, the series received generally positive reviews and saw 79.27 million hours viewed in its first four days of release. The cancellation was a shock to many, though a later report from What’s On Netflix claimed that the completion rates weren’t so impressive. So while many people tuned in to watch the series, not as many actually made it to the finale and finished.

Friese and bo Odar have another project on the way for Netflix called Tyll; fingers crossed that one’s more successful.
