Stranger Things season 5 and the list of the Duffer Brothers upcoming projects

We’re all patiently waiting for Stranger Things season 5 to be released, but this isn’t the only upcoming Netflix project from the Duffer Brothers we’re looking forward to. The creative brother duo has many other projects in the works via their nine-figure overall deal with the streaming giant, and we can’t wait to check out every single one!

Back in 2019, Matt and Ross Duffer inked a major multi-year overall deal to create movies and TV shows for Netflix, with Strangers Things season 4 being the first to come out of the partnership.

Then, in July 2022, the Duffer Brothers and Netflix unveiled their growing slate of projects in active development. The Duffer Brothers also announced their new production company, Upside Down Pictures, which is a part of their deal. At the time, only five projects were reported to be in the works, not including Stranger Things season 5. Since then, there has been one other project announced.

Below, you’ll find all of the Duffer Brothers’ upcoming Netflix projects.

Duffer Brothers upcoming Netflix projects

Naturally, we’d start with Stranger Things season 5. The fifth and final season’s release date has not been announced, which isn’t surprising since production hasn’t even started yet. Principal photography is rumored to kick off in May or June 2023, but it’s the post-production process that we have to worry about. Since Stranger Things is a special effects-heavy show, the post-production process will likely take quite some time. However, the fifth season is expected to come out sometime in 2024.

We don’t have a synopsis for the fifth season yet, but the Duffer Brothers have previously teased some plot details. Stranger Things season 5 will explore the origins of the Upside Down and explain why it’s frozen in time on the date that Will Byers went missing. In fact, the Duffer Brothers says that Will will play a major part in the fifth season’s plot. I’m sure we’ll learn more details about Stranger Things season 5 once filming starts.

Here’s more of the Duffer Brothers’ upcoming Netflix projects:

• A live-action television adaptation of the Japanese manga and anime series Death Note.
• A new sci-fi series from creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) called The Boroughs.
• A television series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub‘s The Talisman.
• A stage play titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow is coming to London in late 2023. It’s based on an original story by the Duffer brothers, Kate Trefry, and Jack Thorne, with the play being written by Trefry. Additionally, it’s set in Hawkins in the year 1959 and features many Stranger Things characters like Joyce Byers, Jim Hopper, Bob Newby, and Henry Creel.
• A live-action Stranger Things spin-off series based on an original idea by The Duffer Brothers.
• An untitled Stranger Things animated series. The Duffer Brothers are executive producing via their Upside Down Pictures production banner, along with Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen via 21 Laps and Eric Robles via Flying Bark Productions.

A Stranger Things anime series titled Stranger Things Tokyo is also rumored to be an upcoming project from the Duffer Brothers, but nothing has been confirmed.
