The Boroughs: Everything we know so far

Netflix has officially handed out a series order for a new science fiction series titled The Boroughs, and we shared everything there is to know about it below!

The Boroughs is set to be executive produced by Stranger Things co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer. Back in July 2022, Netflix announced five upcoming projects from The Duffer Brothers’ which are part of their nine-figure overall deal with the streaming giant. The projects included a Stranger Things spinoff series, a stage play set in the Stranger Things world, a television adaption of The Talisman, a live-action series adaptation of the anime Death Note, and an untitled original series from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews.

Now, it’s been revealed that the original series from Addiss and Matthews is the sci-fi show The Boroughs. Unfortunately, not much is known about the new series because it was just announced, but here’s what we know so far.

What is The Boroughs about?

As we mentioned earlier, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews are the creators of the series. They also serve as showrunners and executive producers. Additionally, The Duffer Brothers serve as executive producers along with Hilary Leavitt via their production company, Upside Down Pictures.

An official synopsis hasn’t been released yet, but Netflix did provide a brief summary of what the sci-fi series will be about.

"In a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have… time."

According to The Duffer Brothers, the protagonists will “have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things,” but they will still be a bunch of outsiders.

Who’s in The Boroughs cast?

Unfortunately, no one has been cast yet. This isn’t surprising because Netflix just ordered the series. We don’t even know if scripts have been written yet. But now that the show is officially a go, we should learn about casting details soon. Who knows, maybe some Stranger Things actors will be cast. We sure hope so!

How many episodes is The Boroughs?

There will be eight episodes in the first season. The episode runtimes are unknown at the moment, but we’re hoping that each episode will be over 30 minutes long like Stranger Things.

When could The Boroughs start filming?

There isn’t an official production schedule yet. As mentioned above, we don’t know if scripts have been written. However, our guess is that they haven’t because the show was just ordered. The scripts must be finished, and most of the casting must be done before production can start. There’s a possibility principal photography can get started by the end of 2023, but it probably won’t finish up this year. Once we find out when production is scheduled to start, we’ll let you know.

When could The Boroughs be released on Netflix?

Obviously, we would like to see this show by the end of 2023, but the chance of this happening is low. It’ll take some time for the scripts to be written, followed by AT LEAST four months of production, and then a lengthy post-production process since it’s a sci-fi series. There’s just no way the filmmaking process will be finished in time to make a 2023 release. For now, our best release prediction is sometime in 2024, but it could come out later than that. You can count on us to share the official release date once it’s announced.
