When The Night Agent made its premiere on Netflix in March 2023, no one could have seen the size of its success coming. Less than a week after its debut, Netflix renewed the blockbuster series for a second season. In less than a month, the series entered the top 10 most-watched Netflix shows of all time.

It’s safe to say that beyond the exhilarating and high-stakes storytelling, the cast of The Night Agent has a lot to do with its success. Each of the characters, including those not originally in Matthew Quirk’s book of the same name, were captivating and wouldn’t be anything without the talented actors who brought them to life.

Unfortunately, The Night Agent season 2 might not have all of the characters and cast members we watched in the first season. Due to the nature of the story and the fact that there’s only one book centered on Peter Sutherland, there’s room for the series to expand Peter’s world and change up the story. But who could for sure be absent in season 2?

Warning: Spoilers ahead from The Night Agent season 1 finale!

Hong Chau might not be in The Night Agent season 2

Thankfully, the first season of The Night Agent told a complete story. While the finale certainly left the door wide open for Peter’s story to continue, we weren’t left with a soul-crushing cliffhanger that would have stung in the event of cancellation. Being so, all of the character arcs were also completed in ways that it’s not entirely necessary for every character to return.

One of the characters from season 1 that viewers might be most inclined to want to see in season 2 is Diane Farr played by Academy Award-nominated actress Hong Chau. In the first season, the president’s Chief of Staff first appeared to be Peter’s biggest ally, but she later turns out to be at the center of the entire conspiracy. She didn’t die in the season 1 finale, but will she be in the next season?

When posed with the idea that Farr could be a “great frenemy” in The Night Agent season 2, showrunner Shawn Ryan seemed to shoot down Chau’s return, telling TV Line:

"“I don’t think that’s safe to say. I thought we told a pretty complete Diane Farr story in Season 1. And certainly Hong is going to have all sorts of job opportunities, so I don’t really know what her availability would be. But what I had pitched to Netflix from the very beginning is that these will be different stories, oftentimes in different places, and that not a lot of characters will port over from one season to another.”"

You can’t help but agree with the viewer who wants to see more of Chau in the series. She and Gabriel Basso had a great on-screen chemistry together, and their scenes were always electric with questions and theories for the viewer. Although she wouldn’t be integral to the story of season 2, having Peter seek out her help, potentially from behind bars, would make for an excellent cameo.

However, Ryan’s response to the possibility of Chau returning to her role as Diane Farr in The Night Agent season 2 seems to manage fan expectations. To put it plainly: It all depends on Chau’s availability and what’s required for the story. Ryan intends for each season to be its own story, and that means some characters won’t carry over from season to season. For now, we can only count on seeing Peter and Rose (Luciane Buchanan) back for season 2.
