Within days of its release in March 2023, the new Netflix original action thriller series The Night Agent became one of the most popular shows on the streamer. It became so popular that Netflix announced The Night Agent season 2 was on its way less than a week after release!

In the series, which is based on the standalone book of the same name by Matthew Quirk, FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) answers the Night Action phone in the White House basement, and a dangerous political conspiracy unfolds until the explosive ending.

Because of the open and shut nature of the first season’s storytelling, and the excessive body count in those high-stakes 10 episodes, we probably won’t be seeing a lot of familiar faces in the second season. So, who might not be back for The Night Agent season 2?

Warning: Spoilers ahead from The Night Agent!

Is Diane Farr in The Night Agent season 2?

Time will tell if Academy Award nominated actress Hong Chau will reprise her role as Diane Farr in season 2, but if she does, Farr definitely won’t be working in Washington D.C. anymore. When Farr’s role in the metro bombing cover-up becomes well-known, she’s officially blacklisted and pushed aside as the chief of staff. She’s shot in the season finale but not killed, and Rose promises to watch Farr get what’s coming to her from the legal system.

Obviously, Farr would no longer be an integral piece of the puzzle for season 2, as she won’t be directly connected to Peter’s new job as a Night Agent. But the show could always bring Chau back for cameos. Perhaps Peter visits her in jail and asks her for advice on a case, or maybe she’s still somehow involved in Peter’s next mission. However, given the events of the season 1 finale, it’s unlikely that Chau would be back in the same capacity for season 2. You never know!

Is Chelsea Arrington in The Night Agent season 2?

The Night Agent creator Shawn Ryan has stated that he envisions each season to have standalone storytelling and include only a small number of characters from the previous season. There are obvious character exclusions going into season 2 (see the aforementioned season 1 body count), but Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola) isn’t one of them. Now that she’s been transferred to the President’s security detail, she and Peter could be working closer together.

Chelsea could continue working for President Travers or a new president (as explained below), both of which would be captivating circumstances to explore. As a Secret Service agent, Chelsea was super loyal — until she uncovered the corruption in the administration. How could Chelsea’s loyalties be tested once again with this new job, and how will her friendship with Peter and Rose (and Maddie!) continue into the second season? We hope to see her back to get these answers!

Is President Travers in The Night Agent season 2?

Speaking of the President, an interview with Basso about season 2 theories suggests that The Night Agent universe could be getting a new administration. Being so, President Travers might not be who Peter’s working for in season 2. As of this writing, we’re not sure if the second season will pick up with Peter’s first mission from the end of season 1, which still found him working under Travers. Season 2 could open with Peter as a seasoned Night Agent a few missions in.

In that sense, time could have elapsed and an election could have flipped the script on Peter. He liked and respected President Travers, but would he have the same relationship with the next president? That’s an interesting and exciting dynamic to think about, which means there could be a shakeup in the Oval Office in season 2. As much as we would love to see her back, Travers might not be our Commander in Chief for the next chapter of this story.
