Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR series: Everything we know so far

If you’re anything like me, the title of this article should excite you beyond belief. Star of some of our favorite hits like The Matrix, Bill & Ted , and John Wick, Keanu Reeves has a superb history of stellar performances and a versatile acting career.

What a lot don’t know is he has also dipped his toes into the comic book game, pitching his idea to BOOM! Studios. With his background in introducing some of the most thrilling, action-packed characters in tons of movies, I’d say he’s well-qualified to bring about his own thrilling, actiony, deeply troubled character into our lives. He may have just done that with BRZRKR.

Let’s take a deep dive into what we know about Keanu’s comic creation and why Netflix has anything to do with it!

What is BRZRKR about?

BRZRKR is a comic series written by Keanu Reeves and career comic book writer Matt Kindt. With its illustrations done by the amazing Ron Garney (known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man and Captain America) and Bill Crabtree, BRZRKR hit the ground running in November 2021, selling over 615,000 copies of its first issue. This made it the second best-selling comic of the 21st century, according to Bleeding Cool.

BOOM! Studios have hit a home run with this one. The synopsis for the story seems incredibly deep and wrought with the typical elements that make Keanus’ past projects so tantalizing. The studio’s synopsis of the story does it best:

"“The man known only as B. is half-mortal and half-God, cursed and compelled to violence…even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the world for centuries, the Berzerker may have finally found a refuge – working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B. will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence…and how to end it”."

What does Netflix have to do with BRZRKR?

So, maybe you’re asking yourself, “What has this got to do with Netflix?” Well, I’m excited to share that as of March 2021, Netflix acquired the rights to BZRKR to bring us not only a live-action adaptation but an anime series as well.

Not only will the live-action film star the beloved Keanu Reeves, but the anime series, which will be voiced by him as well, has already been contracted for two seasons and will broaden the focus on the BRZRKR series, exploring the wider elements of the story.

When will BRZRKR release on Netflix?

As of April 2023, Netflix hasn’t announced release dates for either the live-action film or the anime series, though some speculate it could be released as soon as mid-2024. With everything we know so far about the series, it’s no wonder why many fans of both BRZRKR and Keanu, in general, are so excited about this project. Some speculate the screenplay writer, Mattson Tomlin, was teasing fans with a tweet he posted in October of 2022 possibly showing the screenplay was finished.

Keanu even dodged the question on The Tonight Show when asked about release dates during his recent guest appearance in March 2023.

BRZRKR is bound to be one of the hottest pieces to hit Netflix. The legend that brought characters like Neo from The Matrix and John from Constantine has already brought his very own creation to life and is sure to be one of the greatest film/anime adaptations to date. Now, we simply wait!
