Netflix Obsession episode 1 recap: Let the games begin

Netflix’s sizzling erotic thriller Obsession begins by introducing us to the renowned surgeon William Farrow (Richard Armitage). Not only is William highly skilled, respected, and accomplished in the medical field, but he is married to a strong and ambitious Ingrid Farrow (Indira Varma). They have two children between them, Jay (Rish Shah) and Sally Farrow (Sonera Angel).

Jay is entranced by his serious girlfriend and soon-to-be fiancée Anna Barton (Charlie Murphy). He’s a young man struggling to navigate the difficulties of adulthood and love. While he loves Anna, he also finds himself challenged by her as she can be difficult and to understand. She comes off as very cool, aloof, and in control of herself, something Ingrid notes upon their first meeting.

For some time, Jay has been keeping his two worlds apart, but Ingrid is eager to meet his latest girlfriend, and he finally agrees that the time is right. Jay invites Anna to lunch with his family. But before they can meet in the comfortable, informal setting, Anna attends a function where William is also in attendance. Without any of William’s other family members there, William and Anna chat and spark an immediate connection. They flirt heavily, seducing one another over olives and martinis.

By the time Anna arrives at the Farrow home for lunch, they’ve both mutually agreed not to reveal they met previously. Anna secretly copies William’s phone number from Jay’s phone and reaches out to him. They each add the other’s number to their contacts under simple letters, “W” for William and “A” for Anna.

The luncheon goes well enough, Anna playfully asks William to get her a drink he wants her to have, slowly introducing the ideas of their eventual roles as dominant and submissive. Later, William goes to Anna’s apartment, and the two have sex for the first time, beginning their torrid and taboo affair. Anna is completely in control of their first tryst.

Obsession episode 1 comes to a close with a restaurant meet-up between William and his son, Jay. Jay is worried that his mother doesn’t much like Anna. William tries to pacify his son, claiming Ingrid might feel that he’s moving too fast. Jay tells his father he’d like for him to get to know Anna Better. If only he knew…
