Luther: The Fallen Sun cast guide: Who’s in the new movie?

After over four years, John Luther is returning to our screens in Netflix’s sequel film Luther: The Fallen Sun. Unfortunately, the original series is no longer streaming on Netflix, but that shouldn’t stop you from checking out the new movie!

Idris Elba is back, and he’s joined by several new and returning castmates. In the film, we pick up with Luther imprisoned and determined to catch a dastardly serial killer terrorizing London with his high-tech skills in surveillance. Luther plans his escape from prison so he can track down this murderer before he strikes again.

Idris Elba as John Luther

Of course, Idris Elba is back to play the disgraced detective John Luther. It wouldn’t be a Luther movie without Luther, after all! When we pick up with Luther in The Fallen Sun, he’s in a bad place. Imprisoned and guilt-ridden over being unable to catch a terrifying serial killer in London, Luther is intent on breaking out of prison and doing whatever it takes to track down this dangerous psychopath.

Elba is an acclaimed actor who received several nominations for his work in Luther and in other shows like The Wire. He’s also known for playing Heimdall in the MCU and for movies like Prometheus, Pacific Rim, and Beasts of No Nation. Most recently, Elba lent his voice to the character Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a role he’ll reprise for the upcoming third film. He’ll soon star in the thriller miniseries Hijack for Apple TV+.

Cynthia Erivo as Odette Raine

English actress, singer, and songwriter Cynthia Erivo joins the cast of Luther: The Fallen Sun as DCI Odette Raine, a counterintelligence operative tasked with hunting down Luther after he escapes from prison.

Erivo is an Academy Award-nominated actress best known for her work in the 2019 Harriet Tubman biopic Harriet, for which she received a Best Actress nomination, and her work in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple. She won a Tony Award for her work in the play.

Erivo’s other previous credits include the HBO series The Outsider, which earned her an Emmy nomination, the British series Chewing Gum, Pinocchio, Roar, Drift, and more. She’ll next play Elphaba in the upcoming musical fantasy film Wicked: Part One alongside Ariana Grande.

Dermot Crowley as Martin Schenk

Unlike newcomers Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis, Dermot Crowley reprises his role from the original Luther series. He plays Maritn Schenk, Luther’s former boss. Crowley is a 75-year-old Irish actor well-acquainted with both the stage and screen.

Luther is one of his most notable roles, but Crowley has been working in the industry for many decades. He also starred in The Foreigner, The Death of Stalin, The Wonder, Pennyworth, and many other films and television shows.

Andy Serkis as David Robey

Andy Serkis plays the primary antagonist in Luther: The Fallen Sun. He is a tech billionaire that doubles as a serial killer who uses surveillance technology to manipulate his victims before killing them. Luther is determined to take him down at all costs.

Serkis is a prolific English actor who has made a career for himself delivering spectacular performances and voice work for computer-animated characters, like Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also played Caesar in the Planet of the Apes reboot films, and he’s played multiple characters in the Star Wars and Marvel universes. In 2022, he played Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman.
