Idris Elba will return as Detective John Luther in the upcoming continuation of the hit BBC One series Luther, Luther: The Fallen Sun, which is slated for a March 2023 release date. Jamie Payne, who previously directed Luther series 5, returns to direct the movie. Show creator Neil Cross penned the script. Cross and Elba will serve as producers on the film alongside Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready. Dan Finlay, Brendan Ferguson, Miki Emmerich, Kris Thykier, and Priscilla Parish share executive producing duties.

Netflix has revealed that Luther: The Fallen Sun will be released in select theaters beginning on Feb. 24 and then it will come to Netflix on Mar. 10.

"In Luther: The Fallen Sun — an epic continuation of the award-winning television saga reimagined for film — a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary."

Idris Elba will return to reprise his role as Detective John Luther, and Dermot Crowley also returns as Martin Schenk. They will be joined by Academy Award-nominated actress Cynthia Erivo, who plays Luther’s nemesis, and Emmy Award-winning actor Andy Serkis will play the villain. No other cast members have been announced yet.
