Considering that RIPD is largely considered one of Ryan Reynolds‘s worst movies of all time, it’s surprising that someone greenlit a sequel, though it wasn’t released until almost ten years later and sent directly to physical media, but still, surely that money could have been better spent. Not only was the first movie critically panned, but it was a box office bomb, so it’s truly a wonder that a follow-up film got made.

But if you’ve been on Netflix lately, you might have noticed that RIPD has quickly climbed the charts and is now high on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies, meaning some people seem to like it or are at least interested enough to give it a chance.

If you’ve watched RIPD and want to continue hanging out in this spiritual realm, you might want to check out the prequel film RIPD 2: Rise of the Damned. Keep reading to find out some interesting facts about the comic book film.

Is RIPD 2: Rise of the Damned a prequel or a sequel?

Despite being called “RIPD 2,” this 2022 movie is actually a prequel to the 2013 movie. It takes place in the American West circa 1876.

RIPD 2 cast

Burn Notice star Jeffrey Donovan leads the RIPD 2 cast. Hemlock Grove actress Penelope Mitchell and Hollyoaks alum Rachel Adedeji join him.

  • Jeffrey Donovan as Roy Pulsipher
  •  Penelope Mitchell as Jeanne
  • Rachel Adedeji as Avatar Roy
  • Evlyne Oyedokun as Avatar Jeanne
  • Richard Brake as Otis Clairborne
  • Jake Choi as Slim Samuels
  • Tilly Keeper as Charlotte Pulsipher
  • Richard Fleeshman as Angus
  • Stephanie Levi-John as Beverly
  • Nick Wittman as Zeke Samuels
  • Nóra Trokán as Nell
  • Kerry Knuppe as Hano
  • Johnny K. Palmer as Willie

Is Ryan Reynolds in RIPD 2?

No, despite being the big star of the first movie, Ryan Reynolds does not reprise his role as Nick Walker in the second movie. Considering how critically reviled these movies are, it’s unsurprising that Reynolds would opt to move on. But the second movie is also a prequel, so it would make little sense for his character to be in it anyway.

What is RIPD 2 about?

Taking place in 1876 in the American West, Rise of the Damned follows Sheriff Roy Pulsipher (Jeffrey Donovan) after he gets killed by an outlaw gang and recruited into the RIPD (Rest in Peace Department). As much as he wants to avenge his murder, Roy will have to set that aside to assist in saving the world when a gateway to hell opens in an old mining town, threatening all of humanity as they know it.

Will there be a RIPD 3?

It’s unlikely there will be a RIPD 3 because the first two movies were poorly received by critics and audiences. The sequel was sent directly to DVD/Blu-ray and did not even receive a theatrical release.

Where to watch RIPD 2
