Squid Game premiered on Netflix on Friday, Sept. 17, 2021. As more viewers tune in on Netflix and finish the new Netflix original series, everyone wants to know when the Squid Game season 2 release date will be. How many seasons of Squid Game are there?
There is only one season of Squid Game on Netflix, as of November 2021. But there will be more in the future as Netflix has renewed it for a second season and even ordered a reality show with a similar premise to the show.
Will there be a Squid Game season 2?
There’s no doubt Squid Game season 2 is going to happen on Netflix. The series was officially renewed in June 2022, which isn’t surprising at all given how successful the first season was.
Since the first season premiered and caught on in the mainstream, everyone has been asking creator Hwang Dong-hyuk about season 2.
Hwang Dong-hyuk shared thoughts on season 2 with The Hollywood Reporter:
But there are some other stories in the series that have not been addressed. For example, the story of the police officer and the story of his brother, the Front Man. So if I end up creating season two, I’d like to explore that storyline — what is going on between those two brothers? And then I could also go into the story of that recruiter in the suit who plays the game of ddakji with Gi-hun and gives him the card in the first episode. And, of course, we could go with Gi-hun’s story as he turns back, and explore more about how he’s going to navigate through his reckoning with the people who are designing the games. So, I don’t know yet, but I’ll just say there are a lot of possibilities out there for season two storylines.
Squid Game season 2 synopsis
We obviously don’t have any firm details regarding the season 2 plot, but during a recent interview with Ilgan Sports, star Lee Jung-jae who plays Seong Gi-hun revealed that the Front Man is returning and may play a more central role in the second season, which will have a revenge-centric plotline.
When is Squid Game season 2 filming?
During his interview, Jung-jae revealed that Squid Game season 2 will finally begin filming this summer! He suggested that the second season might take even longer to film than season 1 because it’s going to be much larger in scope.
Squid Game season 2 release updates
It’s going to be a long time before we see Squid Game season 2 on our screens. Fans have already been waiting for more than a year since the first season debuted in September 2021, but anticipate at least another year or more in wait time before the sophomore season comes out.
Since season 2 won’t start filming until summer 2023 and could potentially take 10 months or longer to finish, odds are we aren’t going to see it on Netflix until the very end of 2024 or even in 2025. Jung-jae said the first season took 10 months due to COVID-19 delays, so you’d think the second season would take less time, but he also said season 2 could take longer due to its size.
Until filming officially starts, we can probably assume it will take at least a full year from the time filming starts to the time post-production wraps to get the show ready to go, meaning it wouldn’t be completed until summer 2024 or even the fall, and thus setting up a winter 2024 date or early 2025 premiere.
