As part of their multi-year creative partnership, Netflix and Unorthodox creator Anna Winger—alongside her production company Airlift Productions—are collaborating on a new project titled Transatlantic. The drama series is set during the 1940 refugee crisis in Marseille, France, reports Deadline.

Those who enjoy fiction inspired by true stories will want to add Transatlantic to their watch list when it releases, as the story is inspired by the Emergency Rescue Committee and the events of Julie Orringer’s 2019 novel, The Flight Portfolio.

This project will be the first under Winger and Netflix’s deal, created to produce international dramas for the streaming service. Given the acclaim and accolades received by Unorthodox, it’s understandable why Netflix would want to continue working with Winger.

Transatlantic release date

In February 2023, Netflix quietly revealed that Transatlantic starring Gillian Jacobs will premiere its seven-episode first season on Friday, April 7. If you have been waiting for the next project from the Community and Love star, it’s coming to Netflix very soon!

According to the Deadline article mentioned above, the series had been slated for a 2023 release back in 2022. Production was underway in early 2022 on location in Marseille. The series was also shot in English, German, and French.

Transatlantic cast

Back when the series was announced, its cast was the main event. Fear Street and Community alum Gillian Jacobs was cast in the series alongside Gotham star Cory Michael Smith and Billions actor Corey Stoll. Grégory Montel, Lucas Englander, Ralph Amoussou, Deleila Piasko, and Amit Rahhav will also star.

Here’s what we know about their characters:

  • Jacobs is playing a character inspired by Mary Jayne Gold. She is an American heiress who throws her trust fund into Varian Fry’s refugee rescue operation.
  • Smith will play a character inspired by Varian Fry. Varian is an American journalist that foresees the horrific events of the Holocaust to come and is shocked by the lack of American action. He tries to save intellectuals and artists stuck in Europe.
  • Stoll will portray Patterson, an American Consul in Marseille who thinks refugees are a threat to American values.
