Is Unorthodox season 2 happening?
Inspired by the autobiography Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman, Unorthodox received critical acclaim upon its release. As reported by Elle, the series follows 19-year-old Esty Shapiro (Shira Haas), a Satmar Jew living in Brooklyn. Locked into an arranged marriage with a fellow Satmar Jew named Yanky (Amit Rahav), Esty faces pressure from her community to consummate her marriage and start a family.
The four-episode miniseries follows Esty as she flees to Berlin after discovering that she’s pregnant. Once there, she begins to shed aspects of her Jewish identity and attempts to win a scholarship to a music conservatory. Meanwhile, Esty’s husband is searching for her. Unorthodox is the first Netflix series to be mostly in Yiddish, which is pretty cool!
Unorthodox left viewers with a few unanswered questions, and fans want to know when they can expect the series to return. Here’s what we know about season 2 of Unorthodox.
Will there be a second season of Unorthodox?
Unfortunately, Unorthodox will not be back for a second season. Here’s what series producer Anna Winger told Metro about the decision not to continue the series:
"We’re not doing a sequel to this because we feel that we really told this story. It was always designed as a mini-series. I suspect that I will work with these actors again, and with many of my collaborators from this project. We have a lot of new things in development. So it’s not the end of the road for this constellation, but I don’t think we’ll tell this story again. We’ve told it."
Alas, all good things must come to an end. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check out the first season of Unorthodox on Netflix.
