Back in October 2020, the Netflix original miniseries The Queen’s Gambit took the world by storm. Within a month of its release, the series become the most-watched Netflix limited series to date, and thanks to critical acclaim, award nominations (and wins!) soon followed.

Based on the novel of the same name by Walter Tevis, The Queen’s Gambit stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon, a chess prodigy battling an addiction to drugs and alcohol. The seven-episode series landed Taylor-Joy an Emmy Award nomination.

But will the actress be stepping back into the world of Beth Harmon for The Queen’s Gambit season 2? Since the release in 2020, fans have been split on whether they want a second season. Now, Taylor-Joy seems to be hinting one could be on the way.

On Jan. 30, 2023, around 9:30 a.m. ET, the Golden Globe-winning actress sent out a simple tweet which read “The Queen’s Gambit 2.” She offered no additional context and the tweet was quickly removed not long after being posted. What does this mean for the hit series?

Is The Queen’s Gambit season 2 happening?

UPDATE: Taylor-Joy later cleared up the confusion on her Instagram story, explaining that her Twitter account had been hacked.

Despite Anya Taylor-Joy’s confusion and excitement-inducing tweet, as of January 2023, Netflix has not announced anything concrete about plans to bring back The Queen’s Gambit season 2. While the tweet could have been the beginnings of an announcement, it could have also been the actress testing the waters to measure the demand for a new season. Who knows!

It’s worth noting that prior to the deleted tweet, Taylor-Joy hadn’t tweeted since Nov. 23, 2020, which was exactly one month after the release of The Queen’s Gambit. The tweet celebrated the viewership of the award-winning miniseries. Not to read too far into it, but it’s suspicious her first tweet back (whether deleted or not) would also be about the Netflix series.

Since The Queen’s Gambit shot to popularity in 2020, Taylor-Joy has continued to also gain popularity, taking on roles in Last Night in Soho, The Northman, The Menu, and Amsterdam. She’ll also be seen in the upcoming films The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Furiosa. We’ll just have to wait and see if her cryptic tweet means The Queen’s Gambit season 2 is coming up too.
