The Queen’s Gambit has taken off as one of the best ever Netflix original series. Viewers can’t get enough of this series, and the numbers back that up.

Netflix reports that this series has reached 62 million households in the first 28 days of its release. That makes The Queen’s Gambit officially the most popular scripted limited series for Netflix.

The Queen’s Gambit is based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. It’s on Netflix’s growing list of book adaptations. Because of the show’s popularity, the book is now on The New York Times Best Seller list.

Netflix also revealed that the series is on the Top 10 list of most-watch movies and shows in more than 90 countries, and the series ranked no. 1 on the Netflix Top 10 in more than 60 of those countries. Fans of the series have really gotten into the game of chess.

According to Netflix, Google searches for “How To Play Chess” have hit a nine-year peak.

NPR has reported that chess sets are selling out everywhere due to the popularity of this show. Toys giants like Spin Master and Goliath games have seen an increase in chess sets sales by more than 1,000 percent.

Why is The Queen’s Gambit so good?

Besides the fact that the production is amazingly done, Beth (Anya Taylor-Joy) is a character that draws you into her non-traditional life. Taylor-Joy plays Beth with an intensity that keeps viewers locked into the storyline.

The almost superhero quality of Beth has viewers cheering for her continued success throughout the series. In the male-dominated world of chess, it is empowering for women to see Beth triumph over the men who think she doesn’t belong in their world.
