It’s officially a new year and Netflix has already started unrolling new TV shows and movies for us to enjoy. One of their first documentary series of 2023 follows Bernie Madoff, the Wall Street stockbroker who was behind one of the biggest Ponzi schemes in history. United States prosecutors estimated his massive scheme was worth a whopping $64.8 billion. In the new series, titled MADOFF: The Monster of Wall Street, we learn how Madoff got involved in such a business and how his actions massively affected people across the globe.

The four-episode limited series debuted on Netflix on Wednesday, Jan. 4, and it includes dramatized reenactments along with interviews with people involved in the case. Academy Award nominee Joe Berlinger directed each episode, who’s best known for his many true crime docuseries including Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills and Netflix’s Conversations with a Killer and Crime Scene shows.

Madoff is no longer with us today. He passed away on April 14, 2021 at the age of 82 in a North Carolina prison. According to the Associated Press‘ report at the time of his death, it was believed Madoff died of natural causes, and CNBC confirmed he was being treated for “terminal kidney disease,” according to his lawyer, while behind bars. He requested early release from his sentence in 2020 due to his failing health, but was denied.

The late schemer was sentenced to 150 years in prison on June 29, 2009 after pleading guilty to 11 felonies.
