If you’re looking for a good movie to watch before the year’s end, we’d recommend White Noise on Netflix. The dark comedy comes from acclaimed filmmaker Noah Baumbach and stars talented actors Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig as a married couple. As a blended family with children from previous marriages and one of their own, they live quite a charming and low-key lifestyle where the highlight of the week is simply going grocery shopping together.

White Noise might not be Baumbach’s highest-rated film to date, but it might just be his most ambitious. The film is based on the novel of the same name written by Don DeLillo and certainly has a bigger budget than Baumbach’s previous works. White Noise incorporates elements of sci-fi, not just comedy and drama, which is fun, and the cast is really fantastic. All in all, I’d definitely recommend the film despite it not being perfect.

If you’re starting to watch White Noise on Netflix or simply watched the trailer and are curious to know more, you might want to know when and where the film takes place.

Does White Noise take place in the 1980s?

White Noise is kind of ambiguous when it comes to the setting, but we do know the film takes place sometime in the 1980s. The costumes, makeup, and hair in the movie are really fantastic and take you back in time. As for the location, the book takes place in a small, fictional Midwestern town. That goes for the movie, too, and it was filmed in Ohio.

The film made its official debut at the Venice International Film Festival this year, and as of Dec. 30, it’s streaming on Netflix!
