Emily in Paris season 3 premiere recap: Savoir or Sylvie?
By Mads Lennon
It’s a beautiful night on the Eiffel Tower, and Emily is being harangued by her two bosses, Madeline (Kate Walsh) and Sylvie, to the point they force her backward off the balcony, and she plummets to her death. The end. Kidding. The dramatics are just part of Emily’s opening dream because we’re back in Emily in Paris, and Emily still can’t make decisions.
Spoilers ahead for the Emily in Paris season 3 premiere episode
The Emily in Paris season 3 premiere is aptly titled “I Have Two Lovers,” except this time, Emily is trying to balance Sylvie and Madeline, oh and her relationship with Alfie, which Emily tends to forget is even a thing more often than not.
Emily in Paris season 3, episode 1 recap: I Have Two Lovers
Even though Emily appears to have accepted Sylvie’s offer to work for her at her new company, she can’t bring herself to tell Madeline that she’s quitting, resulting in a stressful few days where Emily tries to balance both women and their demands simultaneously. Seeing as she’s never been great at plate-spinning, it doesn’t take long for everything to come crashing down around her.
Emily’s ex-boyfriend Doug calls her seemingly out of the blue to offer her a new client: McDonald’s. They want to partner with a luxury French marketing firm to launch the “McBaguette,” which, yes, is a real thing.
Sylvie needs new clients at her firm because they don’t have as many as they thought they would, but she doesn’t think McDonald’s is the right fit. Emily initially agrees until her new “friend” Gabriel takes her to lunch at a Parisian McDonald’s. It’s a much different experience than we have here in America; there’s no Hamburglar in sight.
Speaking of Gabriel, it’s not just Emily out there “playing the field.” Gabriel and Antoine meet with both Savoir and Sylvie to see where they can get the best deal for Maison Lavaux. There’s an awkward moment when they catch Emily at Sylvie’s, having just come from a meeting with Madeline. Luckily for Emily, if anyone understands juggling two lovers, it’s Antoine. He agrees not to tell anyone.
The same can’t be said for Luc, whose big mouth has gotten Emily into hot water more than once. After leaving his laptop in the war zone that is Madeline’s office, Luc must return to retrieve his client files (he doesn’t trust the cloud). When Madeline sees him there, they have a conversation that leads to Luc revealing Emily is double-teaming Madeline. Needless to say, she’s not happy.
Madeline crashes Sylvie’s dinner that night at the Eiffel Tower in a set-up eerily reminiscent of Emily’s dream. And while Emily doesn’t fall off the tower this time, when Madeline and Sylvie find out she’s been working for both of them, Emily probably wishes she had just taken the swan dive.
It turns out the women aren’t as open to the idea of Emily two-timing them. Amid this now-chaotic dinner, Madeline’s water breaks, and she refuses to let Emily into the ambulance. Then Sylvie fires her, and their McDonald’s representative is ba da ba ba bah—not lovin’ it.
Of course, the cherry on top of this nightmare of an evening comes when Emily realizes she missed Alfie’s going-away party that she planned. Alfie realizes that this is how it’s always gonna be with Emily, her work comes first.
Mindy takes over the premiere’s subplot when she, Benoit, and Étienne book an incredible gig at a jazz club. Mindy performs a stunning rendition of “Jai Deux Amors (IHave Two Lovers)” by Josephine Baker. Her performance earns her a callback. They want her to be a regular at the club, but there’s a catch: they don’t what her bandmates. Now Mindy is the one who will have to make a tough choice. I recommend she not follow in Emily’s footsteps.
Les petits plaisirs from the Emily in Paris season 3 premiere
- Anyone else catch Mindy asking Emily if she’s on birth control? Are they foreshadowing an Emily/Alfie baby this season?
- Antoine can barely contain the dollar signs in his eyes when he meets Alfie and learns he could help Antoine globalize his business. Is this how Alfie returns to Paris? We know Lucien Laviscount is a series regular now.
- Sometimes people cut bangs when everything’s fine!” Do they, Emily?
