All eyes are on Netflix as we inch closer to the end of the year and look ahead to 2023. The streamer is known at this point for canceling shows after one or two seasons, breaking hearts all over the globe. Just this year, Netflix has canceled fan-favorites such as Warrior Nun, Fate: The Winx SagaThe Midnight Club, First Kill, and so many others. Despite these titles having passionate fanbases, however, the viewership numbers just weren’t good enough for Netflix to order more episodes. It’s the sad reality of streaming these days.

So what about Wednesday, Netflix’s teen supernatural hit that’s continuing to break viewership records? Naturally, they have to renew it right? Fans have been nervous about the show’s fate, especially after actress Catherine Zeta-Jones admitted she had “no idea” whether or not Wednesday would be renewed. Well, good news comes from Deadline who says it’s not a matter of if Wednesday will be renewed, but when.

Wednesday could be renewed in early 2023

According to the report from Deadline published on Dec. 16, they see Wednesday being renewed for season 2 as “inevitable,” though sources tell them Netflix is waiting until the new year to make any announcement. Of course, this is not confirmed by the streamer itself, but it seems pretty plausible to us. We fully believe Wednesday will be coming back for a second season, so let’s hope we get that official news sooner than later! Maybe on New Year’s Day? Only time will tell!

Wednesday viewership numbers on Netflix

You might be wondering why people are so convinced Netflix will renew Wednesday for a second season, and that’s because of how wildly successful it’s been. The dramedy crossed the 1 billion hours viewed mark in the first 28 days of its release, coming up on top in viewership over Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and Money Heist: Part 5. Wednesday is now Netflix’s third most-watched series after Squid Game season 1 and Stranger Things season 4, and the streamer’s second most-watched English-language series. Pretty impressive for a young adult series.

And Wednesday‘s popularity is far from over. We’re coming up on a month since its release and at the time of this writing, it’s number 2 on Netflix’s Top 10 TV shows. We’re sure it will continue to bring in high numbers through to the new year.

When could Wednesday season 2 come out?

So when Wednesday does get renewed for a second season (if it does), when could it come to Netflix? Well, considering we haven’t gotten the renewal yet and the year is almost over, we can assume season 2 probably wouldn’t come out in 2023. The show’s star, Jenna Ortega, has four upcoming projects, according to her IMDb page, and her fans know she’s usually booked and busy. We’re sure production on Wednesday season 2 will have to work around her schedule.

According to the same Deadline report, “producers are starting to talk to writers about joining the second season’s writers’ room and mulling season two locations.” If Wednesday gets renewed soon and writing begins in 2023, we can probably expect the second season to come out in late 2024. This is just speculation, however, and not confirmed by Netflix. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait longer than that, if Netflix orders a second installment.
