Wednesday season 2 release updates: Is Wednesday season 2 happening?

The first season of Wednesday arrived in November 2022, but fans are already eager to know if Wednesday season 2 is in the works. It’s not surprising given how amazing the show’s first season is, or how the season ends.

Without spoiling anything for those who are still working through the show’s first season or have yet to begin season 1, let’s just say the writers do a really great job of bringing closure to certain stories while ending the season in a way that leaves you wanting more. As such, it’s only natural that fans be eager to know if another season is coming our way.

Netflix has become more generous in handing out renewals in recent years, but we’ve seen a lot of first-year shows fail to make it to a second season. Just this past year, we’ve seen several new shows canceled after just one season, which creates a natural curiosity about whether a second season of Wednesday is planned.

Is Wednesday season 2 happening?

On Jan. 6, Netflix officially announced the second season renewal of Wednesday, which means it’s time to get excited that Wednesday season 2 is happening! The renewal news comes as little surprise since the odds of Wednesday getting a second season were incredibly high.

The series is built around a popular domain and has been one of Netflix’s most heavily promoted shows of the year. Netflix has promoted the show more than we’ve seen it promote many of its other new shows and even gave it a big push in October at New York Comic Con.

After Wednesday premiered, showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar chatted with Variety where they shared they have plans for more seasons. When asked if they already have ideas for the show to continue, Millar said:

"“Yeah. For us, it’s always looking at the future, and when we sit down to create a show, it’s looking at multiple seasons, ideally. That’s never expected, but that’s the anticipation that hopefully the show is successful. So you always lay out at least three or four seasons’ worth of potential storylines for the characters. It can evolve and change. Often, you want to see which characters or cast pop and who you like to write for. So you want to keep it open and organic enough to change it and evolve, but we certainly have a pretty clear runway of what we want to do in future seasons.”"

Wednesday ratings and viewership numbers

The good news is that Wednesday is doing extremely well viewership-wise. As Deadline reported, the teen drama set a record for Netflix, with a whopping 341.23 million hours viewed in the first week! That’s more hours than Stranger Things season 4 saw in one week.

As of January 2023, the series stands as the second most-popular English-language series of all time. Wednesday has already notched over 1 billion viewing hours after a little over one month of release and pulling six consecutive weeks with over 100 million viewing hours.

Is Wednesday season 2 cancelled?

No, Netflix has not canceled Wednesday. Right at the start of 2023, rumors began swirling that Netflix would remove Wednesday and a potential second season would stream on Amazon Prime Video. The Independent reported that due to a merger between Amazon and MGM (the latter being the producer of the series), the hit series was “in danger” of jumping ship.

IndieWire quickly debunked the rumors of Wednesday moving to another platform, revealing the streamer and MGM locked in a deal for Wednesday before the merger with Amazon. Netflix officially put those rumors to bed on Jan. 6, when it announced the renewal of Wednesday for season 2 which will, in fact, be streaming on Netflix.

Is Wednesday season 2 out on Netflix?

While Wednesday has been renewed for a second season, no new episodes of the show have been added to Netflix since the show’s initial launch. At this time, no release date has been set for season 2 and it remains unclear whether the new season will be coming in 2023 or held for 2024.

Initial confusion seemed to develop as to whether season 2 was out on Netflix after the show’s official renewal announcement video on YouTube ended with a message about the show streaming now. The plug was designed to promote season 1 which is streaming on Netflix, as season 2 is not currently streaming.

Is there a Wednesday season 2 trailer?

At this time, there is not a formal trailer for Wednesday season 2; however, Netflix did release a season 2 announcement video on Jan. 6 to help promote the show’s renewal news. In the announcement video, Netflix pieces together clips from season 1 to help promote the show’s return rather than featuring any new footage from the show.
