Does Johnny die in Firefly Lane season 2 part 1? (spoilers)

Firefly Lane season 1 ended with several significant cliffhangers regarding the show’s main characters, Tully, Kate, and Johnny. Not only were we left wondering what could have happened to end the 30-year friendship between Kate and Tully, but season 1 also left Johnny’s fate hanging in the balance.

In the season 1 finale, Kate learns that Johnny was nearby an IED explosion in Iraq. We don’t find out whether or not he lives or dies, and that storyline takes place in the present, so there’s no way to know if Johnny survived the explosion.

Does Johnny die in Firefly Lane season 2 part 1?

No, Johnny does not die. After the IED explosion, he is rushed to a hospital in Germany, where Kate and Tully fly in to meet him and see how he’s doing. Prior to their arrival, the doctors administered brain surgery on Johnny to relieve some swelling in his brain.

Johnny’s doctor tells Kate they’re not sure if he’s going to recover yet and that it will be easier to tell once he wakes up. Thankfully, Johnny does wake up, and even though it’s going to take him time to recover from his many injuries, he will be okay.

But even though Johnny is physically okay, it quickly becomes apparent that he is now suffering from trauma and PTSD from his trip to Iraq. That’s something he has to grapple with throughout the new season.
