One of the biggest mysteries in Firefly Lane season 1 is why Tully and Kate stopped being friends after 30 years together. At the end of the first season, Tully tries attending Bud’s funeral to pay her respects, but Kate stops her cold, telling her that what she did was unforgivable and she never wants to see Tully again. What could possibly have led to the end of the Firefly Lane girls?

Firefly Lane season 2 part 1 addresses this mystery and finally catches us up to the 2005 storyline. We learn exactly what happened between Tully and Kate to lead to their ultimate friendship breakup.

Major spoilers ahead for Firefly Lane season 2 part 1

Below we’ll dig into the chain of events that led to Tully and Kate’s big fight and look ahead to the show’s future to see if there might be a chance for reconciliation.

What did Tully do to Kate in Firefly Lane?

One night in 2004, Marah went to spend the night at Tully’s house so Kate and Johnny could reconnect over a romantic weekend together alone. While at Tully’s, Marah gets a text from her crush, Ashley, inviting her to the movies. Even though Marah is grounded, Tully can’t say no to her goddaughter and lets her go out with Ashley.

But later that night, she gets a call from a panicked Marah. Ashley dragged her to a frat party to reconnect with her ex-boyfriend, and then she left with him, abandoning Marah at the party. Marah started kissing a guy there, and he tried to take things too far, so she ran and hid in a pantry.

Since Tully assumed she’d be in for the night, she has a few glasses of wine. But when she gets the call from Marah, she immediately drops everything to pick her up. On the way home, Marah and Tully get T-boned by an oncoming car and end up in the hospital. Once the police arrive, they determine that Tully was driving under the influence. Even though the accident wasn’t her fault, the story becomes a massive scandal as Tully gets arrested for drunk driving.

Kate is livid with Tully for letting Marah go out while grounded and then driving drunk with Marah in the car. Luckily, both Tully and Marah are okay, but Kate freezes Tully out after the accident. Eventually, Marah tries to force them to talk by tricking Tully into coming over with a text from Kate’s phone. But it ends badly as Kate tells Tully she cannot forgive her.

Will Tully and Kate make up in Firefly Lane season 2 part 2?

At the end of Firefly Lane season 2 part 1, a year has passed since Tully and Kate’s big fight. They haven’t spoken to each other, and both have tried to move on. Kate attends a creative writing class and tries making new friends while Tully fixes up her and Cloud’s old home on Firefly Lane.

Tully gets a job opportunity to go to Antarctica for several months to work on a global warming documentary. She leaves just as Kate discovers she has inflammatory breast cancer. Tully is the only person she wants to turn to in comfort despite everything, but when Kate shows up at Tully’s door, Tully has already left.

I think there is a perfect chance they will make up in season 2, part 2 since it would suck for the show to end with them on bad terms! Unfortunately, the finale ended on such a heartbreaking cliffhanger. Still, I’m sure Kate and Tully will make amends in part 2, and Tully will support Kate through her treatment and her second marriage to Johnny.

Firefly Lane season 2 part 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
