A new romantic drama titled Lady Chatterley’s Lover arrives on Netflix on Dec. 2. While waiting for the movie’s release, you probably have questions regarding it. For example, is Lady Chatterley’s Lover based on a novel? Find out here.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover is a new Netflix original movie helmed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre from a screenplay written by David Magee. You might recognize Clermont-Tonnerre as one of the directors of the Hulu original series The Act. Additionally, Magee is an Academy Award-nominated writer who’s best known for writing the screenplays for Finding NeverlandLife of Pi and Mary Poppins Returns. He also co-wrote the screenplays for Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day and Netflix’s The School for Good and Evil.

The story follows Lady Chatterley, a woman whose life seems set when she marries her upper-class husband, Sir Clifford Chatterley. However, things take a turn when Sir Clifford Chatterley returns from the First World War with injuries that have left him paralyzed. Feeling lonely, Lady Chatterley finds comfort in the arms of the new gamekeeper of their estate, Oliver Mellors. However, what begins as flirtation turns into a full-blown affair that threatens to upend Lady Chatterley’s life as she knows it.

The Crown‘s Emma Corrin stars in the leading role of Lady Chatterley. Jack O’Connell, Matthew Duckett, Joely Richardson, Ella Hunt, and Faye Marsay also have roles in the film.

Is Lady Chatterley’s Lover based on a book?

Yes, the romantic drama is a film adaptation of D. H. Lawrence’s book of the same name. In fact, Lady Chatterley’s Lover was the English author’s last major novel before his passing. It was first published in 1928 in Italy and later in 1929 in France. It wasn’t published in the United States until 1959 because it was initially banned for its obscenity and graphic sex scenes. Truthfully, it’s the most controversial of Lawrence’s books.

If you would like to purchase the novel, you can do so on Amazon as a Paperback or a Hardcover. You can also buy it as a Kindle eBook.
