From the creators of the German series Dark comes a new twisty tale of passengers immigrating to America at the end of the 19th century. 1899 is multilingual and features an ensemble cast of characters from all over the world, making for one of Netflix’s most ambitious series of the year.  If you’re looking for a gripping mystery that’ll have you hooked from the first episode, look no further than this period thriller. All eight episodes just debuted this morning on November 17.

Spoilers ahead for 1899 on Netflix.

The series follows characters all wanting to start new lives in America. Whether they’re running from something in their past or just need to start over, their secrets start coming out as the show progresses. All they want to do is get to their destination, but their plans get interrupted once the crew finds a ship called the Prometheus that had been reported missing for four months. Can they continue on their journey and leave the ship there, or should they turn back to bring it home? That’s what the captain, Eyk Larsen (Andreas Pietschmann), has to decide.

In the premiere episode, Eyk enlists some of the passengers to go investigate the Prometheus, hoping to find people onboard. But surprisingly, it’s empty. All except for a little boy (Fflyn Edwards) who is locked in a cabinet. Throughout the rest of the show, the boy’s identity is a mystery, and many people start to believe he’s the cause of the tragedies to come.

Is the boy in 1899 the devil?

One of the passengers, a Danish woman named Iben (Maria Erwolter), believes the mysterious little boy is the devil himself because of all the happenings that occur once they bring him on the Kerberos. This is just her being paranoid, however. We can confidently say the little boy is not the devil! He’s just a human and his name is Elliot.

Is the boy Maura’s son in 1899?

As it turns out, Maura’s memories had been wiped so she’s experiencing everything just like we are as the viewers. She finds out that a mysterious man on the Kerberos named Daniel (Aneurin Barnard) is actually her husband, and they have a son together, Elliot! So yes, the little boy they find on the Prometheus is Maura and Daniel’s son. She’s shocked to find this out and is so confused as to how she cannot remember. She looks at photographs of the three of them together in Daniel’s memories and says she feels nothing.

We learn in the final two episodes of 1899 that in their reality, Elliot had been dying of something and Maura was desperate to keep him alive. Because of this, she and Daniel created a simulation so they could be with him in it. But things went wrong along the way and her brother ended up taking control of the simulation and has been controlling it for the events we see in the show. Fortunately, Daniel is able to hack into the mainframe and reprogram it, which eventually gets Maura back to reality in the finale.

The year is 2099 and Maura is on a spaceship called the Prometheus. Spooky! Though Elliot is nowhere to be found, she receives a message from her brother which says “welcome to reality.” That’s where the show ends, leaving us with so many questions as to what Maura will do next.

Though 1899 has not been renewed for a second season yet, the creators want to keep it going so fingers crossed that the viewership numbers on this one are good and we get to see this awesome story continue!
