If you’re looking for something mind-bending and intriguing to watch this weekend, be sure to add 1899 to your watch list. The new release just debuted on Netflix in the early hours this morning, introducing viewers to a large group of passengers traveling from Europe to America on a ship called the Kerberos. The ambitious series is multilingual, and most of the shots were filmed using a new technology called The Volume, which has been used by Disney and Warner Bros.

1899 looks fantastic, features really great performances by the ensemble cast, and the story is very easy to become immersed in. If you’ve already started binging the eight episodes, you might be wondering which characters make it out alive by the end. There are many life-threatening moments and deaths throughout, so let’s break it all down.

Spoilers ahead for 1899 on Netflix.

Though the trip on the Kerberos starts off on the right foot, everything changes once they find a missing ship called the Prometheus that’s been lost for four months. The captain of the ship, Eyk Larsen (Andreas Pietschmann), has a hard decision on his hands in determining if they should turn around to tow the ship back to Europe or continue on to America. Meanwhile, really strange and creepy things start happening when they find a boy on the Prometheus and bring him back on the Kerberos.

Here’s who ends up dying in 1899.

1899 show deaths

  • Ada, killed without explanation and found laying on the deck
  • Other unnamed passengers, killed in the same fashion
  • Krester, dies by jumping overboard
  • Other unnamed passengers, also by jumping overboard
  • Olek, getting tossed overboard during a storm
  • Lucien while suffering a seizure
  • Ángel by being crushed by pieces of the ship and rubble during a storm
  • Iben drowns during a storm
  • Anker drowns during a storm
  • Franz drowns during a storm
  • Eyk, killed by the first mate with the simulation device

There’s a lot of speculation as to why so many passengers die by jumping overboard and not many answers throughout the episodes, until the end, that is. A worker named Olek (Maciej Musiał) questions if the passengers on the Prometheus also died by jumping overboard. Others are convinced the mysterious little boy (Fflyn Edwards) brought all the death, with a Danish woman named Iben (Maria Erwolter) believing he’s the devil.

Well, as we find out by the end, everything is actually a simulation. Everyone is living on a loop that lasts eight days before resetting. Though Maura and her husband Daniel (Aneurin Barnard) created the simulation to keep their son alive, the mysterious little boy who we find out is named Elliot, her memory has been wiped and her brother has control.

Will the dead passengers in 1899 come back to life?

The Prometheus and the Kerberos are just part of the simulation and aren’t actually real. While many of the passengers end up dying in 1899, they all die in the simulation, so they aren’t actually dead. When Maura gets back to reality in the 1899 finale, she sees the other passengers — including the ones who “died” like Eyk and Olek — all strapped in with a device on their heads. Think Avatar. In the simulation, they might experience death, but if they were to come back to reality, they would presumably come back to life as well.

There are a lot of reveals in the final two episodes of 1899, but we still have so many questions! Here’s to hoping Netflix renews the series for a second season.
