It feels like the premiere just aired, but fantasy fans are already looking ahead to House of the Dragon Episode 10, a.k.a. the season 1 finale. The season will come to a close this Sunday, Oct. 23 on HBO and HBO Max, and fans will definitely be left with a void needing to be filled. Shows Like House of the Dragon: The Last Kingdom

The Last Kingdom is a historical fiction drama based on the book series The Saxon Stories written by Bernard Cornwell. The show tells the story of what would become the start of England, with King Alfred (David Dawson) carrying out his plan to unite people into one kingdom. We follow protagonist Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon), a character who was captured as a child and fights to reclaim his rightful homeland.

Like the Game of Thrones universe, The Last Kingdom is all about the fight for power, great battles, and the importance of carrying on your family name. If you enjoy the Netflix show, you’ll be happy to know that a movie, Seven Kings Must Die, will also be coming to the streamer. The Last Kingdom has five seasons total and ended in March 2022.

Shows like House of the Dragon: The Witcher

Henry Cavill stars as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher. Based on the books by Andrzej Sapkowski, the fantasy story follows different timelines in the first season as we get to know the main characters — Geralt, Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra), and Ciri (Freya Allan). The series has more magic than House of the Dragon, but it’s similar in the sense that it takes place during a medieval-type time period and features battles, prophecies, and power struggles. With long blonde hair, Geralt could totally pass for a Targaryen, right?

The Witcher season 3 is expected to hit Netflix in summer 2023, and a spin-off, The Witcher: Blood Origin, comes out this December.

Shows like House of the Dragon: Vikings: Valhalla

Another historical drama on this list is Vikings: Valhalla, Netflix’s new spin-off to Vikings. The sequel is set 100 years after the original series, following legends like Norse explorer Leif Erikson. We continue to watch the Vikings’ journey as their era officially comes to an end. One season is out so far, and it’s super action-packed and entertaining. The series has been renewed for a second season which is due out sometime in 2023.
