The Crown might not have deadly tournaments or mystical creatures, but it’s all about power and the importance of the succession, and that’s why it’s so similar to House of the Dragon. The Netflix series chronicles the British monarchy, a.k.a. the Royal Family, starting with Queen Elizabeth II and her marriage to Prince Philip. Different actors portray real-life figures as the seasons go on, with the upcoming fifth season set to explore Princess Diana’s life.

House of the Dragon star Matt Smith appears in the first two seasons of The Crown as Prince Philip, and Game of Thrones alums such as Tobias Menzies and Charles Dance also play big roles.

The Crown season 5 hits Netflix this Nov. 9.

Italian historical fiction series Medici is a hidden gem that’s available to stream on Netflix! The show follows the real-life House of Medici, a powerful family of bankers in the 13th century. Over the years, they produced multiple popes. The series follows different characters and time periods, with the first season covering the story of Cosimo de’ Medici, the second all about Lorenzo de’ Medici, and the third finishing up Lorenzo’s story.

The show concluded in 2019.

Shadow and Bone is a super popular Netflix Original that’s a YA fantasy fan’s dream. The series is based on a book series by Leigh Bardugo, and though it’s aimed at a younger audience than House of the Dragon is, it’s still a great watch. The show follows protagonist Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), an orphan who learns she has powers that could save the world. Along the way, she meets a powerful man named General Kirigan (Ben Barnes) who isn’t as innocent as he seems.

The second season is due out on Netflix in 2023.
