Players

Release Year: 2024

Director: Trish Sie

Cast: Gina Rodriguez, Damon Wayans Jr., Joel Courtney, Augustus Prew, Liza Koshy, Ego Nwodim, Marin Hinkle, and Tom Ellis

Players is not the worst romantic comedy out there and not even the worst one on Netflix by far, but it's still a frustrating movie with a main character that feels like she was transported from the early 2000s to remind us how "not like other girls" she really is.

This is the type of film you should only watch if you're super invested in someone from the cast, like Gina Rodriguez or Lucifer star Tom Ellis. Otherwise, there's not much here that we haven't seen before (and done better).

I do appreciate that Players tries to do something a little unique with the genre by mixing in elements of a heist movie—except this time they're looking for sex! However, fans of tropey films will enjoy this one, as we get plenty of the classics here like friends to lovers, a quirky friend group, and, of course, the main female character being a journalist.

Parts of Players were endearing, but overall the film just can't rise above its faults and the movie ends up being forgettable.

Verdict: SKIP
