Purple Hearts was released on Netflix on July 29, and people still can’t stop talking about the romantic drama film. As of Aug. 2, it’s sitting at the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s top 10 movie list, and it doesn’t look like it’s about to be coming off anytime soon.

Purple Hearts stars Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine as two people with vastly different worldviews who decide to enter a temporary marriage solely for the military benefits. Carson plays the role of Cassie Salazar, an aspiring musician who tries her best to chase her dreams while living with Type I diabetes. During a chance encounter, Cassie meets Luke Morrow, a soon-to-be deployed U.S. Marine with problems of his own. Cassie and Luke don’t get along right away, but once they realize one thing they have in common is financial debt, they agree to a marriage of convenience. However, falling in love was not a part of the plan.

While watching the romantic drama, you might’ve wondered about the significance of the film’s title. Also, what is an actual purple heart? We’ve gotten to the bottom of the movie’s title and the definition of a purple heart below.

What is an actual purple heart from Purple Hearts?

A purple heart is a decoration/medal awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who have been wounded or killed while serving. It is one of the most recognized and respected medals to be presented with as a service member. Also, it shows how much a service member has sacrificed while in the line of duty.

Purple Hearts: What is the meaning behind the movie’s title?

According to HITCPurple Hearts has a double meaning. The film’s title references a purple heart, which we mentioned above, and a heart in the romantic sense. So it’s basically a play on words bringing together the military aspect of the film and the fact that it centers around a love story between Cassie and Luke.

Sofia Carson spoke with Collider and provided the deeper meaning behind the title. She talked about how she asked the director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum if the movie’s title was meant to be the blending of a red and blue heart. Rosenbaum told Carson that she didn’t think of the title that way but that it’s basically what the story is about.

Carson said, “We live in a country that’s so incredibly divided right now, red versus blue. This story is about choosing not to see color and choosing love, above all things, and how a red heart and a blue heart can come together and choose love. That can change the world in the most beautiful way.”

Purple Hearts is streaming now only on Netflix.
