Watch trailer for true crime docuseries I Just Killed My Dad
By Mads Lennon
We’re still reeling from the horrifying discoveries presented in Skye Borgman’s recent documentary feature Girl in the Picture, but it’s time to buckle up and prepare for another wild ride as Netflix prepares to debut the three-episode documentary series I Just Killed My Dad—how’s that for an eye-catching title?
Girl in the Picture spent three weeks on Netflix’s global top 10 English film list and I imagine this docuseries, which centers around a controversial case and topic, will beat that record. As you might have guessed from the title, this story revolves around a young man who shot his father and openly admitted to doing so.
But the docuseries will explore his reasonings behind pulling the trigger. Did he have motive? Was he actually acting in self-defense? The case in question is the never-been-told-before true story of the Templet family, specifically Anthony Templet. In three parts, I Just Killed My Dad will examine Anthony’s psyche leading up to the events of June 3, 2019 and the aftermath of his decision.
I Just Killed My Dad trailer
Netflix debuted the official trailer and key art for I Just Killed My Dad on July 28. In it, you’ll see that Anthony Templet is actually a participant in the documentary.
In a brief snippet, we hear him stand by his conviction that he did nothing wrong and at least one other documentary subject refers to Anthony’s father, Burt Templet, as an “evil man.” I have a feeling this is a docuseries that incite plenty of debates online.
It appears the courts agreed with Anthony because he pleaded no contest to killing his father, receiving a reduced charge of negligent homicide. He was placed on supervised probation for five years. Anthony claims he killed Burt in self-defense after years of abuse and neglect.
Executive produced by Nicole Sorrenti and Half Yard Productions, I Just Killed My Dad premieres globally on August 9.
