Franklin Delano Floyd, also known as Brandon Williams, Warren Marshall, Clarence Hughes and several other names, is a murderer, rapist and predator at the center of Netflix’s new true crime documentary film Girl in the Picture.

Throughout this chilling, but moving doc, we learn the truth about a young, beloved and bright woman taken from the world far too soon. At the time of her death, Suzanne Sevakis was known as Sharon Marshall, wife of Warren Marshall. But as the documentary unfolds, we learn that the story was far more complicated and horrific than one could imagine.

Floyd was initially tried for the kidnapping of Michael Hughes. It was a challenging case for the prosecution because they did not have Michael’s body, nor concrete evidence that Michael had been killed. All of the evidence was circumstantial.

In 1994, Floyd went to Michael’s school and kidnapped him and the principal at gunpoint. he took the principal to the woods and duct-taped and handcuffed him to a tree before stealing his truck and leaving with Michael. He was charged with carjacking and using a firearm during the carjacking, kidnapping and a second firearm offense for using one during the kidnapping.

Ultimately, the prosecution was successful on all counts and Michael was sentenced to 52 years in prison, no parole, for the kidnapping of Michael Hughes.

But later, when the detectives linked him to the murder of Cheryl Commesso, he was re-tried and charged with first-degree murder in Florida where the death penalty is legal. He was found guilty of a capital crime and sentenced to death in 2002 and has remained on death row ever since.

Yes, Franklin Delano Floyd is still alive. He is currently incarcerated at the Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, Florida. He is a death row inmate and an execution date has not been set. Given he’s 79 now, it’s possible he’ll die of natural causes before he can be executed.

After journalist Matt Birkbeck’s book on the case, A Beautiful Child, re-ignited public interest in the case, the FBI and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children got involved and re-opened the investigation in 2011. A few years later, two FBI agents interviewed Hughes on death row, where he finally confessed to murdering Hughes and revealed Sharon’s true identity. Sadly, Michael’s body was never found.

For years, Franklin claimed he was “Sharon Marshall’s” father. Detectives later learned her real identity was Suzanne Marie Sevakis and no, Franklin was not her biological father.
