The Most Hated Man on the Internet: How long did Hunter Moore go to jail? Where is he now?

Given that just about every day a new person is elected to the dreaded position of “main character” of the day on Twitter, it takes a lot to be dubbed The Most Hated Man on the Internet, but that title went to Hunter Moore in the early 2010s after he created the revenge porn website IsAnyoneUp.

Netflix’s latest documentary series explores Moore’s rise to infamy and his eventual fall, as the mother of one of the victims came forward and refused to back down until Moore was forced to pay for his crimes, which included a hacking conspiracy to steal nude photos from unsuspecting victims and later upload them to his website.

Ahead of the three-part docuseries release, which comes out on July 27, we’re taking a look at where Moore is in 2022.

When Kayla Laws’ nude photos were uploaded to IsAnyoneUp without her consent, she could not have known that it would eventually lead to the eventual imprisonment of “professional life ruiner” Hunter Moore, but that’s exactly what happened.

While Kayla’s step-dad, Charles, an attorney, was able to get Kayla’s photos removed from the site, her mother, Charlotte Laws, was not content to simply let things go. She had contacted more than 40 victims of Moore’s and started to believe that he was not simply taking user submissions but actually hacking into accounts to steal illicit images.

Charlotte eventually worked with several FBI agents to dig deeper into this conspiracy and they found a connection between Hunter and a hacker named Charlie Evans. Moore was later sentenced to two years and six months in prison after accepting a plea deal for charges of hacking and identity theft in February 2015. He was released in May 2017. Evans was sentenced to 25 months in prison.

He sold IsAnyoneUp in 2012 to Bullyville founder James McGibney. McGibney also later filed a defamation suit against Moore after Moore allegedly called him a pedophile and threatened to rape his wife. McGibney is one of several subjects featured in The Most Hated Man on the Internet and goes into detail regarding his experiences with Moore.

The Most Hated Man on the Internet: Where is Hunter Moore now?

According to the documentary series, Moore was actually banned from social media. But either the ban was only in place for a few years or it isn’t being enforced because he does appear to be active on Twitter again.

After getting out of jail, Moore told Substream Magazine that he was planning to release EDM tracks and also write a book. He did publish a tell-all in 2018.

On what Moore is up to now, documentary producer Vikki Miller says:

"We do know from social media that he still holds the same attitudes. He is still saying: I just provided the platform, blame the guys that posted the pictures. I always thought that argument could never work now, post #MeToo. The world, and in particular attitudes towards women, has changed so much since Hunter Moore created IsAnyoneUp. Surely he can’t still say that and get away with it? But he still seems to be peddling this line and I’m very intrigued to see if people will buy it this time round."

Interestingly, Moore was originally going to participate in the docuseries but later changed his mind. The creators then pivoted to focusing more on Laws’ narrative, which was probably for the best.

The Most Hated Man on the Internet starts streaming Wednesday, July 27 on Netflix.
